Stuck 200tdi Injector Pump

I did not realize the pin should be greased. Mine was dry and clean when I had it out a while back.

Were you able to set the timing with a dial gauge? I’m wondering what the difference is between this pump and the 300Tdi version as I was under the impression that the timing can not be set with just the pin.

Good to hear that you got it running right!

No dial gauge. Just followed the remove & refit instructions in the Land Rover Defender Workshop Manual 1993/1995 for 200tdi timing. Basically, it is just making sure it all lines up at the same time - Crankshaft TDC mark lines up with the cover plate web while the number one cylinder is closed, timing pin goes into the narrower notch on the flywheel & timing pin can slide easily & fully into the IP.

The test drive will determine if it's "running right". Actually sounds normal though. I'm sure there will be fine tuning. I'm on a steep learning curve right now.

The timing can be set with the pin on either pump or engine. The pumps are nearly the same.
the downside to setting the timing with only the pin is that you have no idea what the actual value is. the gauge is more accurate

The clang/knock/ring issue I've always had, people had indicated that it may have been due to the timing being off, even though I also used the pin method, and the truck ran "fine". I think the pin method gets it installed and lined up to the engine, probably within tolerances, but that the only real way to get it exact is to use the dial. Right?

I dont use a dial indicator. Its a complete pita.
In your case you cam timing may be off.

Happy to report that my 200tdi runs like a champ! Maiden test drive was only a few blocks, so I could re-check the fluids, then took it about five miles.
Love that it still sounds like a tractor.
