Spare On The Bonnet?

Good to have the option of a second spare on the hood for off pavement trips, but it's not needed if tire shops are available.
Hoods that have partially buckled when dropped with a spare are not uncommon. Rust doesn't help the structure underneath.
A spare smaller than the other 4 tires is a space saver intended to get you to the repair shop at a reduced speed.

I keep my primary spare in the back, but will use the bonnet mount for a 2nd spare when overlanding. A lighter weight option is to get a tire strap (looks like a Y) and use that on the bonnet to carry just the tire without the rim.

Is there anything more ROW spec than a bonnet mounted "tyre"?

Strips and drop hitch.

Oh man, this is a true ROW icon
- tires not available in the US(assuming they're 235 85 Goodyear MTRs that we never got)
- Chequer plating everywhere
- drop hitch
- Disco 1 spare steelies
- bog water for coolant
I had a set of 235 85 r16 MTRs. They existed here (circa 2002).

I think that is just UK spec.

Were they not a different design? I remember selling the ones off the 2012 Puma we had and people were contacting me from all over for them. I think they changed the tread pattern for the US market at some point

True, but home market/ROW often get meshed together in the eyes of the public

A bonnet mounted spare is iconic. Reminds me of the movie Born Free and every other movie from the 60s and 70s set in Africa, which I think is where my infatuation with Rovers took root.
