What do you think? I have a swing away on the back but hey, isn't 2 spares better than 1?
Plus I will be able to do this:

Love the look but it's a total pita if you need to get under the hood. Also know of cases from living in Africa where the spare came through the windshield in a front end collision.... not good for the occupants.

Time to get a bigger bull bar. :D

Seriously... I never thought of that. Good point.

Yeah I came in here to mention the projectile issue. Not that any of us can be that safety minded given the vehicle choice. That said, I primarily defend auto personal injury for a living - and projectiles through the windshield are no fun.

In B4 Yeti makes a flat cooler and Wrangler hood attachment.

(That may be a pretty good idea...)

Like JSQ says, "Two spares is one spare and one spare is no spares". It's high on my list to get a Mantec carrier and modify it to work with my drop tailgate.

The bonnet spare is not that difficult to deal with. Even I can hold the bonnet up with one arm. You do need a reinforced bonnet for it, though, because that's a lot of weight bouncing around. Surely there are some take-off ex-MOD bonnets out there.

I personally do not run a spare on the hood unless I have no where else to put it. I do not enjoy the lost forward vision of the 235/85 on the hood of the series. I could not imagine having a 255/85 spare on the hood and it doesn't sound like you are putting it on for the "look" so there would be no point in putting a 7.5/R16 on the hood as it is 2" shorter than your current size.

IME the weight of the spare cracks the steel hood support frame, just like it does the rear door on a station wagon. I have a collection of bonnets busted up by 7.50 16 spares.

Perhaps I'll toss it up on the roll cage rack and call it good. I don't want to destroy the bonnet.

2 is 1 and 1 is none. I have a 255/85-16 on my hood, some bitch about opening it (you know who you are) but I'm a man so it doesn't bother me. I also have a 33-12.5-15 on the back 'cause the ladies love it. As an extra precaution I also carry a spare tire around my waistline these days in case I really get stranded I'm always packing lunch.

Chris,

BritParts has one for the drop down tail gate... I have it but haven't got the chance to install it yet. The part number is DA2274.

If you already have a hood with a tire mount, you may as well put it up there because that hood is pretty much worthless. I think you could probably buy one of those hoods for $100.

I wouldn't want a tire on the hood unless it was really narrow. I think a 255/85 would be too wide.

Yeah I'm 6'5 260 and I still hate your shit. Maybe its because I have changed the entire drive train except the axles, added power steering, gone back in and done a head gasket after you over heated it and all that time that damn 100 lb lump has been on the bonnet. Love ya brother

Egads. Thanks for thinking of me but that carrier is pretty awful looking. I'm. It feeling the really long arms and that fuel can mount is ugly, too. I like the the simplicity of the Mantec. Don't need any more fuel cans.

My bonnet (hood) looks like this underneath. I have the components on top surface of hood but unsure if this hood has all the necessary supports or not.

Anyone with part numbers and photos of what I may be missing?
