Replacing fuel pump

Haven’t purchased timing light or checked into that. Still only will run after several times cranking over. I have noticed that when turn key off and does not start can hear fuel fueling back into fuel tank. I do not remember hearing this ever before. The fuel lines I hooked back up when I replaced the fuel pump are tight and no signs of a leak. It this gurgling sound as fuel returns to the tank part of why it will not easily start ??

There is a fuel return line, that’s normal.
at this point sounds like you just have a hard start problem which is an improvement. Does it start any better with full throttle while cranking?
how does it drive, is it missing (sputtering or backfiring?)
I feel fairly confident that the distributor is too advanced, and thus hard to start.

Thanks for your reply. It does not ever start with full throttle. It drives fine. It idles well with no back fires or stumbles with revving engine. Have let ur run for several minutes with no missing or idle issues .
seems as if you prime the fuel pump just hard to start.
sometimes it seems if you prime the fuel pump by turning the key to have the pump run four or five times before finally committing to engaging the starter it will run faster. Definitely hear the bubbling sounds of fuel returning to the fuel tank during this process.

Other thing that seems to make it start is to remove plug wire From cylinder one and watch the spark on an old plug for a few times by just turning it over long enough to see spark. Then reconnect the plug wire and it seems to run.
Maybe these are just things I’ve noticed that are not truly relevant.
i guess I need to get my hands on timing issue and not be afraid to adjust distributor a little

Are any codes showing on the ecu display unit? It’s either under the dash in the passenger footwell or under the passenger seat.

No codes there. I have cleaned the air intake control valve with no change. I have fuel coming from return side of fuel pressure regulator and no fuel in the vacuum line.
No check engine light. Have around 5or 6 gallon of fresh gas in tank. Just out of red area
