Recommended 200 TDI starter?

Was searching for a new starter to continue replacing items on the D90, and found that the starters available are all over the place in terms of price.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a solid starter? Was considering the one I was seeing available from lucky 8 because I’ve been having some good luck with other parts from them, but wanted to be sure before pulling the trigger.

valeo d9r91/ 432574 if you can find one is the 3.1kw new french manufacture hi torque starter.

Hard to find but the best hands down.

There are other 3.1kw out there made by Israel that are almost as good.

A third high power option is the British starters.com version it's a gear reduced viper V10 starter that is even smaller. Expensive but nice.

Standard starter is 2.1kw.

I have one of the Israeli units that I purchased through Robert Davis. It's fantastic. Let me give you some background on why I would say that.

Last September I was on a camping trip at the Maze Overlook in CNP when I blew a hole in my clutch fork on the way in. I was driving my 200tdi exMOD 110 pulling a Sankey trailer and I was also powering a fridge. After two nights there with daytime temps in the 90s, the fridge had run down to the point where it had shut off, which meant the battery was down to around 11 volts or less.

But because I had no clutch, I was forced to attempt start it in gear, with the trailer connected. This was on a rocky, unpaved surface, and with a run down battery. That starter did it and allowed me to enjoy a lovely drive home pulling a trailer with no clutch.

The starter I had in there before that one would not start the engine if the fridge cutoff switch had activated, much less pull the truck and the trailer while in gear. And as it turns out, the new starter is significantly SMALLER then the original-- which made it easier to install. So I'm of the opinion that a good high output starter is money well spent.

I put in the High Torque Starter from Series-Defender Outfitters and love it.

Will look at all of these options! The Valeo has popped up several times, but definitely interested in Roberts and Series-Defender outfitters.

The viper V10 starter is bullet proof. Requires you to trim the motor mount bracket when being installed on 300tdi/R380 combo.
