R380 oil coolers

I know the NAS Discovery 1 with the R380 came with an oil cooler for the gearbox. My understanding is that ROW did not come with the oil cooler.

In almost all of my British vehicle gearbox experiences they do not shift real well until warmed up.

I am putting a Discovery 1 with R380 I recently purchased back on the road after 9 years of inactivity. I plan to use Redline MTL.

I am wondering if it is prudent to continue using the oil cooler? I am thinking the oil cooler may not be necessary with the Redline MTL and it may be a little harder to pump cold gear lube (compared to the ATF it came with) through the cooler and lines.

My other Discovery with an R380 was converted from an auto and the one I installed came with the 300TDI and the no oil cooler ROW gearbox. Until I picked up this one with factory R380 installed I didn’t even know they were installed with oil coolers at all.

Just understand too cool a transmission is also bad. Depending on trans, size the cooler correctly and utilize a thermostat when necessary. Know your optimal oil temp for your oil/trans combo and try and keep it there.
