I hate buying crap and never cheap out or settle! Every review I read online regarding pretty much every backup camera contains the words, crap, short lived, PO:poop: or defective out of the box. What brand or even better what model number have you had success with and would purchase again?

I had an Autovox v5pro in my f550 for a year or so. worked great. biggest PITA was ham fisting the formatting of a large SD card. I'll be installing the same setup in a Snatch this week.

The Optimil camera (referenced above) has to be the best backup camera option for most Defender owners because it integrates so nicely replacing the existing license plate light cover (and piggybacking power off of that lamp's line). The video feed is a simple RCA input that can be connected to your header unit of choice.

I own one but have not installed it yet, so can't comment on the actual video quality.

I think Dave is looking for one for his Prado, my only suggestion is one that is of a brand you've heard of. Of all the ones I've installed/used that were "generic" I'd say half were either DOA, or died within months.

good topic, is the "best" referred to as for use on a Defender or best camera? @javelinadave you are not putting on a Defender? Some AV gurus may chime in, but im pretty sure a single RCA is maxed at 720 resolution, maybe Ron good at best. ;)

I recall an old post on this or the other forum as a combo with a mirror. I would be interested in something like that as well. Even in a small mirror screen, im a sucker for the highest res possible. eventually will put on the 130, especially if i get a hood on the back.

Expanding my comment above: the *housing* for the Optimil rear camera has to be the best option--maybe there is a better *camera* to place in it. (Fair point about the limitations of the RCA video feed, etc)

Optimil sells a inside-rearview-mirror screen as an option for their rear-camera setup, but to be honest, it does not look impressive. Once I get around to installing audio head units with giant screens on my trucks (mostly for Apple CarPlay), I will wire up the Optimill backup camera to them. For me, being able to control music without distraction is mission-critical, and backup cameras are an add-on bonus--but, of course, YMMV.

Not sure their quality is any better, but something intended for RV's is probably worth looking at.

I have one of those optimill cameras, while nice to have my only issue is that the camera is mounted on one side, so when I parallel park on my left side it doesn't show the corner that is closest to the car behind. When doing standard backing or parking on right side it is fine. Can't comment on picture quality because my screen is shit.

All great options fir a full system for a Defender. I’m looking for just the camera for my Prado with an RCA plug setup.

A Company based in Japan called JDM Export exports Japan Domestic Market vehicles to the US including Prado. Attached is their contact info. I’d either give them a call or email as guessing they might be able to provide information on this for you.
