LS builds could consider this an alternative (albeit pricey) to upgrading the entire driveline since all of the torque apparently gets insulated in the portal gear ratio. Pic/Statement from their website:

I have always thought portals would be a cool modification eliminating the need to do any suspension modifications. There is some beef on the internets regarding the strength of the tibus portals saying they don’t hold up to anything beyond mild on and off-road usage. At the point they’re needed for use and the cost I don’t see why a user would not just begin with a unimog and call it a day rather than pay the $20k for these and then have to buy into tires and all the other regular vehicle modifications.

The designdevelopmenteng ones look interesting but they’d have to cost under $5k for a complete set to be mass marketable even if people had to source stage one axles with 24 splines etc.

So far the Design Development ones are for series trucks only but I read that once they get them built they will see what changes need to be made to make them work for a Defender.

Really cool. Although I am curious why they are using straight cut gears instead of helical cut gears. AM General switched to helical cut gears on their portals (geared hubs) later. Rocking when coming to a stop was 1 small reason but a lot of that was because the brakes were inboard mounted but I though wear, vibration and noise was another.

@FlyersFan76 straight cut gears are easier to "engineer around" as the forces are in a single plane (perpendicular to the angle of the gear teeth). Helical cut gears under load try to push themselves apart at an oblique angle, meaning their housing, and support bearings, need to doubly withstand. Especially in an application that has to be compact, like a portal box, it makes a big difference in the overall design.

Disclaimer, I'm not an engineer though.

But in all seriousness, because I know we’re serious on this forum, can anyone tell if stance is affected dramatically? I was looking at their website and I can’t see more than maybe an inch or two in width over standard axles.

It is about a foot wider. My non-portaled Defender has no wheel spacers with Terra Firma Dakkar Wheels on 255/85 R16 and it is 67" from edge of tread to edge of tread. My portaled defender on Tibus wheels and 305/75 r16 is 79 inches from the edge of the tread to the edge of the tread.
