Perentie, 1 ... BMW X5, 0

Wow, my neighbor ran into me yesterday on my way home ... no, she actually Ran InTo me !

She was at a stop sign, I was turning left onto the street where she was stopped.

She looked at me ... obviously knows the Perentie ... with its headlights on.

I got almost all the way onto the side street and WHAMMM was hit in the left rear and spun around to face the direction I was coming from!?!?

WTF anyway !

Well, I had thought I was going to flop over for a second, managed to steer and avoid that ... even pressed in the clutch and brake and stopped sideways in the street.

Okay, so far so good.

Backed up and parked at the curb...looked behind me and saw a mostly intact X5 in the middle of the t-intersection....bits of plastic, parking sensors, and bumper supporting Styrofoam all over the place.

Called 911, that was interesting, never done that before, told them I was okay, had no idea about the other vehicle occupants, and please send a patrol guy.

Patrol guy arrives, talks with her for a minute ... I really didn't even want to look at the body damage until he was there ...

Then the guy comes over to me and we walk around the left side of the 110 ...

The only damage looks like a small bent section of the Wolf rim lip and scarring, missing plastic rivets on the fender eyebrow!

I'm off to the alignment shop next week, but so far so good.

...edit... sorry forgot to say she whacked me right in the left rear wheel...no body damage I can see so far.

Patrol guy says, "well today I learned buy an old Land Rover not a new BMW" :)

Just gotta hope she didn't tweak the frame. Hopefully if anything bent it's just the suspension arms.

Were you friendly with her before? See how the next block party goes lol

If all places to be hit, arguably the best… unless you needed a frame swap, lol

Man that sucks, glad you are OK!

I heard once that most motorcycle crashes happen within 2 miles of the riders home -- unsure of this being an actual statistic but it makes sense — riders and drivers let their guard down due to the familiarity with the area, and the way people move on in though to the very near future.

Perhaps she was just ahead of herself thought wise and not in the real moment of you still being in the intersection? At speed I would take the X5, but in a 0 - 15 mile an hour crash, which seems to be my average speed anyway, Rover every time!

I heard a similar stat during high school drivers ed (5 miles rather than 2, but same idea). Later in life thought about it and realized of course it's more likely, that's where you spend most of your time! No matter where you go, at some point you will be within a few miles of your house. As Mark Twain said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Thanks kids, still no unusual aches or pains, so that's good. Replaced the damaged wheel/tire with the spare & had a good look around underneath. Looks okay to my non-laser calibrated eye, but we'll know more post alignment shop visit.

I've seen the doors separately. The box inside seems pretty straightforward to duplicate. I'm sure the jerry can carrier / tail light assembly might be a challenge.

I need to talk to my insurance agent about some agreed value I think.

If they'd tweaked the frame it might be game over :(
