Parts that do not need to be Genuine

Counter to the other thread, I thought I'd start one where buying genuine is not necessary, lesser quality, or just way too expensive to the aftermarket/3rd party alternatives. Please list out part numbers and the better alternative if you have it.

Genuine was about $30. Nothing more than 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick foam. About $.30 at Home Depot

Genuine Rotor Buttons. Crazy to say a genuine part is garbage, but they fail with high frequency. Get the nice red ones instead.

However, when it comes to rubber, LandRover has some sort of secret sauce... and we have seen it with door seals. There are no aftermarket door seals that work as well as the Genuine.

I pick and choose my Genuine parts carefully... If it's buried under a ton of other parts, time consuming to re & re, or a part that's super crucial for operation, I go Genuine. If it's an easy swap due to failure, or a mega expensive Genuine, and the aftermarket is tried and true, I'll go that way, or if it's clearly an upgrade.

This is 100% true. We've been using the red ones from AB at the dealership because the Genuine ones just fail after couple of months. We also have not had good luck with Lucas ones from Worldpac.

It would be great if this thread and the other (can't find it) could be a sticky. helpful information for those of us rebuilding and a place where we can post more as we are going through sourcing parts...

it's my understanding that the Lucas name was bought by some eastern european auto parts conglomerate and while is OEM in name, today's Lucas branded parts are just about as bad as it gets.

Lucas pretty much ceased to exist when its parent was sold to TRW in 1999. The brand itself is now owned by the German firm ZF Friedrichshafen

The FAQs forum is supposed to replace stickies in the tech forum. The problem with stickies is that they push other good posts far down the page. This particular forum isn't big enough to warrant them.
