Paint?

So, after a few years of Defender ownership, we've decided - of course! - to get a Range Rover. The previous owner covered up the original paint with a home-brew Plasti-Dip job. It's a 1995 LWB soft-dash RRC, I believe the original spray is Brooklands Green.

If we peel that plasti-dip off, is the paint underneath single-stage or base coat/clear coat? I can't seem to get good information on that.

By then most all Range Rovers were base/clear. Some of the earlier cars were single stage. If it is a metallic paint it is definitely base/clear.

factory paint job is a two stage. (I repainted mine a couple of years ago, British Racing Green also a 95 lwb soft dash). paint, clear coat, thinner, activator, filters etc.. mine had been repainted twice before so it had to go down to metal, thus added etching sealer/primer to the order. all in all
if I remember correctly it came to nearly if not a bit over $2,000.00 delivered to my door from Eastwood. I was afforded the use of a shop with paint booth, my first and only complete paint job.
In retrospect I would not do it again, specially the prep. lots and lots and lots... did I mention how much sanding was done? well it was lots. next time around I would let the body shop do it.

I have a Brooklands Green 94 lwb. Original was definitely 2 stage as said above and the clear coat doesnt stand the UV test of time, likely why yours was coated. Agree with Caligula the primary cost getting it repainted is sanding off all that original clear.
