Oil Question

I need to do an oil change on the Defender 300Tdi today. Usually I use the T4 Rotella stuff. However, as of yesterday with the totaling of my wife's MB CDI GL320, I now have some extra oil sitting around that I won't use, unless I use it in the 300Tdi.

Do you think this is an OK switch?
Mobil 1 0w-30 ESP
Mobil 1 0w-40 European Car Formula, with MB approval 229.5 for their diesels

(I was switching to the ESP because the MB dealer had said their in-house oil was the same stuff. Which is why I have both types.)

0w seems scary to me for such an old design. be prepared for getting a ton of different answers !

Seems like it might leak?
Any issue you see with these formulas, though? I'm merely trying to use what I have without spending another load of cash and still having gallons of this stuff here.

no seems like the 0w wont have the film strength or low temp viscosity to protect the engine? im not an engineer tho .

Bobistheoilguy forums is the mecca for this type of question

No problem with 0W. That is just the viscosity at very low temperatures. 0W means it passes the SAE cranking test at -35C. 5W means is passes at -30C.

The second number is set by the viscosity at 100C. You want the 40. 30 will be too thin when hot.

I normally run 0W40 Mobil Delvac 1.

Yeah. It isn’t the weight I’m so worried about, I just don’t want to use an oil that does t handle the diesel grime so well. I’ll use it and change it out in 1000 miles or so. But at least it isn’t wasted sitting in my garage unused.

Save for next winter it will be fine.
