Oil Filter? What's under your bonnet?

I'm running K&N but now I'm starting to feel like there's a reason none of you are...

For me it is availability. I work at the dealer, so Genuine is always available. I've never had an issue with a Genuine filter, so I see no reason to change. I don't like aftermarket parts unless the Genuine part is just ridiculously overpriced ($600 water pump vs $100 for aftermarket).

Same way for me... But I also believe K&N is garbage.

Their air filters are. They threatened legal action against our dealership when their filters contaminated a customer's mass air flow sensors. They claimed to have tested them and said nothing was wrong with them. This was probably close to a year ago and the customer still has no check engine light after installing two new air filters and mass air flow sensors.

My brothers has one in his 2 seater Japanese car. I can't bring myself to type the model. It kept throwing codes till I cleaned his MAF sensor and threw the K&N air filter in the trash.

I've always stayed away from the air filters in my Rovers, but back when I had a Rodeo (stop laughing, it was a great truck and I miss it) and was young and stupid I thought I "needed the extra horsepower from the V6".

The oil filters have the 1" nut on the top that was nice before I broke down and bought a Channellock oil filter wrench. Plus, everything from when I started using them shows they were no worse than the top of line filters. I just never switched. Maybe I will now.

Man, I miss that Rodeo...5 speed, V6 gas mileage, and same basic look as a RRC with a spare on the back...

K&N oil filters used to be great. They switched a couple years ago to being made in mexico or korea.

^^ This is what I was mistakenly referring to, the air filters. Ruined my MAF on the S60R

I try to avoid running oiled air filters (K&N) on cars with MAF's, and always suggested to my customers to not as well. Some MAF's are really sensitive to oil (and turbulence that open element filters can create). If you need to run an aftermarket element on a MAF car AFE and AEM both make nice dry filters. If it is a MAF truck that see's offroad use throw a dry prefilter on top of the dry element for extra insurance.
