Non-Rover related - VW GTI (but other smaller car-owning parents chime in! 3 kids in the back of a hatchback... how?)

Its a really high quality seat; weighs about 3x what my prior forward facing seat did. My only complaint is that it does not secure very well using only the latch system components. It really needs the car's seatbelt also. With both in place though, it is rock solid.

What I never understood was usually that's recommended against in most seat's instructions (I always did it when I could, why wouldn't you want it more secure, spreading the load over more anchors?)

It is not just the car seats but all of their sports gear, backpacks, or daily stuff. It is more about the seating.
The GTI is surprisingly good for fitting gear. Our 2018 GTI (which replaced a 2008 GTI who's timing chain snapped) is a tad smaller in a few dimensions in the cargo area however.

We have a Sequoia and can fill it with just two kids and a friend. As they get older the supply chain gets longer. Just saying. One of my daughters plays ice hockey and we ski.

I'm the oldest of 5 kids, trust me I know :)
Growing up with that many people is the main motivation for the "gear diet" that is the mantra in my house now. We all swam, plus baseball, lacrosse, basketball and a few other sports peppered in there. My mom's suburban was basically a moving closet.

Found this a year or so ago as the Nuclear option (doesn't appear to ship to 🇺🇸)

This is the best way to achieve what you want in any vehicle you want.

That said, we just test fit our seats when car buying. The first model Range Rover Evoque can fit three across in the back. It is surprisingly wider. We have one in the UK for this reason and my wife loved driving it. The diesel is great. Cannot speak to the gasoline engine models in the US for reliability nor to the new generation models being able to fit three seats.

Its frustrating that something like this isn't available stateside for parents that don't want to drive an expedition for having a few rugrats...
