Noise from recently installed rear Truetrac

I had a Truetrac installed in my '97 approximately 1,100 miles ago, and unlike the one in my old '95 it makes a pinging sound when turning, only after warm. Just driving around town nothing but after driving for any significant amount of time, and I am assuming it is heat related, it starts making a pinging/popping sound when turning. It sounds like someone is tapping on the ends of the axles with a ball peen hammer, and the pitch of the sound changes depending on which way the vehicle is turning. I think it feels like it is locking up. After 500 miles the installing shop drained the fluid and found no significant metal shavings, and confirmed the correct fluid was used. I can live with the sound, but since I am driving it from NM to TX Friday after next I would rather it not blow up on me around Amarillo.

Any thoughts? Thank you.

Give Roadside Rob Dassler a call at ‭(505) 872-7818‬. He has a shop in ABQ and if it has gears, cogs, splines, belts or pulleys he is your man.

Even better reason to bring it back there, that way they can diagnose if it's an install error or defective part

Never had a truetrac make noise. Detroit's sure
Actually, I did!
It was my rear TT in the D1, while I strong-footed my way out of a gully with a broken front axle. It made ratcheting sound - in the retrospect, I think it was essentially satellite gears squeezing all oil from their cavities and rubbing steel-on-steel.

I did, unable to replicate. Told him to drive it longer, same answer. At that point I figure I am on my own.

Logistically it would have been a PITA, but I should have had him look at it again before we left. Sometimes I do seriously stupid shit. My 74 year old mother and I made it Santa Fe to Houston in thirteen hours and seven minutes including stops. Rear diff puked out some fluid from the input shaft, so my dumb-ass will have to look into the issue. Stupid diff has not made a peep since. I have a list of things to do now that the truck is back in Houston, will drain the fluid and check for metal.

Never had a TT, but my Detroit does or at least did, especially when new. I need to listen to it again. Its only done dog duties today.

First and foremost, if it is puking, check your breather tube. Very common for it to be plugged and if so, it will puke the hubs or input seals. Usually the hubs and foul your breaks, but that typically is the only reason why. I'd change the seal, not a hard one.

Mine have never made noise. I'd start by checking fluid level right away. And color/smell of it. Honestly, these are not complicated or difficult to install/set up (I just did another) and typically very durable. But check those other things first. Rob knows his stuff. I would use him in a heart beat so don't assume you are "on your own". He stands by his stuff and if he told me to drive for a little more, I would do just that. But only after checking fluid.

had The engine rebuilt at the same time, 7,400 ish miles on everything so far. It was acting up back then, but no problems now.
