Just saw one in my neighbors garage this evening. Steel wheel & all. Interesting guy, has a Model A that he drove on Paris to Peking.

Like I said, interesting guy ...

That's amazing! I can't even get a day off of my entire summer off to go camping for more than two nights, and if I did, my car wouldn't be in good enough shape to go for three nights. These types of trips just baffle me. Everything from the time, the money, the ability to be away from family -- how? I feel guilty just trying to get 1/2 hour of exercise into my schedule a few days a week!

It appears he's both older and president of a company, so there's your "time, the money, the ability to be away from family". IIRC, you're a teacher, aka. underpaid, overworked, and blamed for society's failings (why mostly lay at the feet of the revolving doors of abysmal parenting). Do your best to take care of yourself too. Life balance is tough. Sometimes it appears everyone else is living the good life, when in reality these forums, the adventures, these overpriced farm trucks; they're all self selecting of the very fortunate few.

LOL, well hyperbole aside, there is a little truth in what we’ve both put down. But at least where I live, we teachers get paid pretty well. This year’s work load is insane though... I’m logging 65-70 hours and can’t keep up. It caught up with me this week, for sure. That’s another story.

That type of rally would be a bucket list type of thing, no? I’ve had some good trips in my lifetime, but that would be tops.

makes me wonder if a new Defender could pull it off........

I stopped into my local LR dealer earlier this week. They MIGHT have had....10 cars for sale on the lot? They've got a new location and a big ole showroom...that was dead empty. I asked, another month before they get inventory.

All they had on the lot were Disco Sports and L405s. Same with the showroom. There was one base model 110, but I think that belonged to someone as it had BFG ATs on it and no stickers.

At this point I am worried about LR reliability. I'm wondering how much of that is the new defender 4 bangers being crappy and getting bought back or people idling their diesels until their DPFs and SCRs clog up. My realtor back in ATL bought a diesel RRS and has had all kind of issues. But he is city driving it which is about the worst for modern diesels.

I'm coming around on the new defenders. In the last 6 months JLR has seemed to improve the interior a bit. Trunk space is dismal so I might eventually be looking at a 130. I'd prefer to have a useable trunk vs. departure angle I'll never use.

When they released the LR3 they made a big deal of the large cubic cargo capacity. With the LR5 and the Pretender, they don't even list it in the spec sheets I've seen. I wonder why, not.

Weird that info is listed on LR USA. Cargo capacity for the D5 (behind 2nd row seat) is 45 Cubic feet. New Defender 110 is 34~34.5 cubic feet (depending on 5 vs. 7 seater) behind the 2nd row.

To ballpark, LR3 has 44.5 cubic feet behind the 2nd row.

That said, like EVERY auto manufacturer now, they bury specs in their website which is annoying.

Drove through the local dealer on Sunday ... none ... zero new Defenders for sale ... one in the service area.

Hey, it's Des Moines ... we're always behind the curve ... I think that's the Chamber of Commerce tag line ;)

So D90s are now in stock at the local dealer. Might be time for a test drive. Worth the trip to see both types.

I know these are tests, but I still cringe on impact.
Having been behind the wheel when this happened, those new Defender vids don't look particularly cringe-worthy. Very impressive how little damage there is, actually. Seems to be a very safe vehicle.

It’s really intriguing to see how similar the 1995 Discovery is size wise to the new 90.
