One thing I do like of what I’m hearing is that they really do seem to be at least trying to make lots of options, even for off roading.

I also like that they are seriously testing and evaluating these vehicles, and hopefully actually engineering a way around the problems as they go!

That's exactly the buy in the marketing dept is hoping for. By releasing short videos shot in the worlds off road hot spots like Serengeti and Moab it is inferred they are testing. In reality, Isn't the vehicle finished and already being produced ?

Agreed on the testing, yet, as the launch date is fast approaching whatever issues crop up not sure if they will be addressed before hand. Hopefully it was well designed and the testing shows it.

The photos and videos we’ve seen are almost certainly production prototypes in final testing phase. I was referring to the testing we have not seen where they claim to be putting 250k miles on the vehicle, then tearing it down to inspect for wear.

I have it on very good authority that LR is finally ditching their in house software development and moving towards an industry standard system used around the world. First vehicle is the Defender.

Which software? The software that powers the whole vehicle? JLR has been using QNX for quite a while. Althought now that I think of it JLR probably has in house engineers messing with the base QNX software.

EDIT. It seems they have been using QNX for years but maybe that was just for the digital instrument cluster.

They signed a new agreement last April. http://blackberry.qnx.com/en/news/release/2018/7107

I'd love to hear the source on that. Plenty of the systems, like every other manufacturer, are not done in house, but are done by companies such as Bosch, Denso, etc.. Seeing as they have a pretty new software development facility in Shannon, Ireland, I doubt they will be ditching it any time soon.

Blackberry is all over the automotive world. Think Ford was one of the first to adopt it.....

The Lego version is looking more and more realistic.

Yep, Lego's front end had it right. Pretty boring design there. Did they just forget something?

Not really any surprises here for the exterior. It's the details that matter now. The interior, reliability, modifications, etc...

My wife’s first impression: it’s a Discovery. That’s not a Defender. That’s pretty bad.

She doesn’t even like my real Defender!

I think this will be much more interesting in real life though. It’s something I’ve noticed about several Rovers these days, especially the D5. It really does look pretty bad in photos, but in person it has some striking elements that seem to be muted in two-dimensions. The size of this thing is still very difficult to gauge. And I suspect this is not the best color for it. Having black wheel arches, and other off set items will toughen up the look quite a lot, especially in the 90 version.

I noticed this about the D5 as well, but didn’t want to admit it. In person, it looks a little slimmer than it’s specs would suggest. I hope the new defender carries its weight the same.

I'm not a fan of the murdered look which this car has. If it's D5 size, then it's much smaller on the inside than the D5 with space lost to the wheel arches though roof line suggests plenty of headroom.
