NAS 110 #66

Two weeks ago I took a ride with @JimC to NY to drop off some parts, pick up some parts and run an errand in Brooklyn. Little did I know that ride would end up with me buying a NAS 110. #66 has had a bit of a journey - it started out in New York with its first owner and then went on to California with them as well. It appears to have been traded in at a dealer and ended up at Land Rover of Las Vegas. From there it went to Hawaii, where it stayed from 2006 - 2014, after which it returned to California on its way to Virginia. It was here in Northern Virginia from 2014 to 2018, when it was purchased, taken for service at Independent Land Rover in Bethesda, MD and again went to New York. It was stored in a garage in New York until today - basically un-driven since it was last in the DC area and now a bit of a project for Jim and I.

Its currently a non-runner - we're chasing some electrical gremlins that are preventing the fuel pump from getting power. The outriggers are nearly full rotted, the bulkhead has significant rust and you can poke your finger through the rear cross member. The paint is peeling in several spots on the front and the second row doors are rusted - the drivers side rusted shut. The factory winch doesn't seem to work and the headliner needs to be replaced.

But she's a beauty. With a 4.6L engine that's got less than 5000 miles on it & a verified 50000 +/- on the odometer, as the previous owner said "She's got good bones". There's years of deferred maintenance to address, and all that comes with it - but I have a feeling this is going to be a good one. time will tell and I'll be sure to post plenty of pictures here as we go along.

A huge thanks to Jim for all his support and assistance - I'll be indebted more than a few cases of beer to this gentleman. Also a shout out to Tommy who was an absolute pleasure to do business with and did everything he could to make sure this truck was taken care of and going to a good home. I'm looking forward to eventually taking #66 on some trips with both of them.

Nice to see pics after hearing the story. JimC has my cell and we just went through a no run fuel pump on his red truck. Turned out to be the inertia switch was bad (which I have never seen before, seen them tripped, but never bad).

1. Silver relays (80%), if it runs when you swap them, you know one is bad.
2. Bad wire at the pump (there is a short lead so you can jump the pump with power directly to it in the back and can check for power in the back — just have JimC do it differently than on the red truck).
3. Bad ECU (JimC has spares).
4. Bad pump.
5. Bad ignition switch (although you would have other issues).

Beyond that, call me. 🤣. Keep in mind the mounting hardware for a NAS 110 fuel tank costs about as much as a new tank and a new pump so careful taking it off. The tapped flat metal plate things are particularly pricey. Don’t throw those out.

Last night we weren't getting power to half the fuse block and weren't getting a click from the pass side relays by the ECU. It is throwing a code 02, which I think is normal. Jim and I will take another look this AM.

You are on the short list of phone calls to make 😂

Check the big fuse box (fuses are big, box is not) under the bonnet by the brake pedal. It’s brown I think. It comes apart into two pieces. Why, I don’t know.

Yep. Look good - bit of corrosion on them. I'm gonna replace most of the fuses just to get clean ones in there when autozone opens up.

I experienced a fuel pump issue earlier this year. It ended up being a bad ground (behind the rear drivers side speaker housing). Pretty easy to check or bypass the connection completely by running a battery directly to the pump. The connection is easy to access from the drivers side wheelwell

congrats on the purchase and I’m looking forward to seeing this truck back in nova

This is a really great truck. It’s in the sweet spot where it just needs some fixing so it can continue to be used for many more years. Mine ran when I got it but was so far gone that it needed immediate complete restoration, but this one is excellent in many places. It looks to me like someone took this one Ziebart and they just didn’t emphasize the trouble spots - so most everything has been well protected but the outriggers, bulkhead, and crossmember rotted.

On the fuel pump, there is no power at the inertia switch, and no power at the fuse either. I cleaned the big fuses, swapped the relays etc, but none of the easy solutions solved it. I gave up when I got tired of messing with the flashlight!

Yeah - that's right, some kind soul had it undercoated and preserved a huge amount of metal. There's some rot to address - but not as bad as it could be!

Started out the day taking a look at 66 in the daylight. It looks like there was a mild restoration done (possibly at West Coast Rover in 2005?) before it went to Hawaii :

New Puma doors
new 2nd row doors
New hinges and hardware
replaced T pieces (b pillar)
Painted roll cage black inside & out
Body Painted Coniston Green
Black Checker Plate
OME 2 inch lift
Cat back Exhaust
3.9 converted to 4.6 w/new 4.6 short block and reman heads

Today, we hot wired the fuel pump and confirmed it worked. Engine fired right up, but with no oil pressure. Deconstructed the oil pump and packed it with petroleum jelly to prime the oil system and got it running. Will be doing an oil change on it (likely the first in five years or more?) Paul brought over a 110 bulkhead that he had originally bought for #66 that I'm purchasing from him. Intend to have it chem / acid dipped, repaired and galvy/powder coated in the near future.

Got it onto Jim's driveway & swapped the wheels for some spares so I can have new tires put on - the ones on it are literally falling apart. Good day, still plenty to figure out w/getting the v8 running correctly, but it runs, so we're closer to finding the problem.

Did Not have a ton of time today with work, but did plenty of reading on the 14cux. Was able to test w/a known working good ECU & relays that we're getting power up to the intertia switch - but no power back at the fuel pump. Between looking at ECU's and trying to figure out which one had which EPROM, just got to that point. I'll start looking for ground issues next as well as test continuity from the inertia switch to the the pump per @lordhelemt

Does anyone know a source for a NAS 4.6 EEPROM? It seems all the ones I have are stock maps of one sort or another.

I think the only NAS 4.6 chips were in GEMS engines, so I think we’re stuck with an aftermarket tune.

What's the plan for the frame?

Plan to repair it - pull everything forward of the seat box (fenders, bulkhead, floor) and have the outriggers and rear x-member replaced.


Please tell me you're going to restore the body to Alpine White. :)

In the short term I'm looking to get the major rust resolved and then probably do a vinyl wrap. In the long term, maybe, but probably not. I'm actually a huge fan of the Coniston green & black cage w/white roof. In fact - the plan was to paint my 90 green before this.

The restoration plan is get it roadworthy, install a longer range fuel tank, do all the deferred maintenance & put another 50k miles on it.

For a 4.6 in a 14CUX people would generally use a 4.2 chip out of an LWB. I probably have, well, I know I have, a spare, it’s somewhere. Honestly it makes no real difference. The 3.9 chip works fine and maybe someone already changed it given it has a 4.6. I am trying to remember, but I think NAS 110 have a 14CU ECU where the chip is soldered, but I would need to check the stack of ECUs I have. You can swap cases between a 93-94 defender ECU (which has the right mounting brackets for a NAS 110) and a RRC/DI 94-95/D90 95 14CUX ECU.

Are you getting power out of the initeria switch? Because if it is bad that would be two truck in a row with the same problem I never saw in 20 years messing with them.
