LT230 Rebuild or Replace

Little thread revival here as I never posted a final update.

This was a wild experience but very satisfying to complete yourself. I wouldn't call it difficult in terms of mechanisms, etc, but lifting/moving/aligning such heavy equipment is quite tricky.

I think the key here is to really work to get everything straight/level before attempting to align and install. As with most projects, the key is the prep work.

Unfortunately, I noticed an issue with my new trans/t-case that's been quite bothersome.

It seems in 5th gear I have a low, reverberating droning noise. It seems to get worse climbing uphill. If I'm going 50 in 4th gear - nothing, 50 in 5th gear - bigtime droning noise.

Does anyone have any input on what this could be?
I was just thinking the other day on the build when you started and how it was running now. Oil levels full on the tranny?

Oil levels are all topped off - everything else is fantastic. Just the droning. It seems to get worse going uphill but maybe because a slight RPM drop on the hills. Thanks for thinking of me - totally forgot to post a final update as I got distracted when the timing belt thread started

Fix one thing, there goes the next!

Seems to be the landy way. Fix one thing to then fix another.

Winchester has a 2 year leak free warranty. The LT230 are all new gears. Nobody is doing it better than them currently. Fed ex door to door.

no, no top speed improvement . none. zero . it will actually be slower to accelerate in 5th to the same top speed as before. on up inclines you will actually have a lower top speed. you arent making anymore power , just gearing it taller and making it more efficient

the 300 turbo you have on there will make maybe 1hp more than the stock unit. its all about fueling and boost. if you want to go faster:

advance timing
increase boost
adjust fueling
get boost and EGT gauge
Can you provide some recommendations for boost and EGT gauges? I have a 24V vehicle, which probably won't matter for the boost gauge (except maybe the light), but might be a problem for a EGT gauge. For the EGT gauge, where would the sensor be mounted? I have the stock coolant gauge, but it seems only marginally reliable. I don't trust it, and a temp gauge you can't trust is worse than no gauge at all.

EGT: https://thesensorconnection.com/pro...-gauge-probe-kit-diesel-race-series-df?v=1648, install the probe in the exhaust manifold, upstream of the turbo.
Boost: VDO 150-104

YMMV, but they work for me.
