LR4 Lean Condition from Vac Leak

Dropped off the LR4 to have dealer check loss of coolant for third time in 50k miles. They said this time there was an air pocket in the system. Must be a big hole in there cause it took the whole expansion tank.

They also noticed a lean condition caused by a vacuum leak which is bothersome for a 50k mile vehicle.

They also say the power steering fluid is very low, dirty and recommend a $275 flush. No mention of where the fluid is leaking from.

Anyone feel like I do that at 50k these things are disappointing?

the power steering flush sounds like classic dealer upsell work. do not do it until you check yourself.

the coolant loss, i think they know, or have some idea, of exactly what is going on but are trying to dodge a warranty repair. they being the technician or service department i mean, not land rover.

the lean condition means nothing unless the check engine light was actually on.

Were their pants actually on fire when they told you those things?

Is there not warranty coverage on these "problems"?

Having said that, the VW dealer ... who only changes my oil under the "lifetime maintenance" agreement that I bought 12 years ago ... constantly wants to flush my DSG trans ... except that it's really just a plain old 6-speed.

Somehow I imagine if I agreed to it they'd find a way to charge me for it too.

Yes, this is a CPO still under warranty for 2 more years. They covered the vacuum leak, with some excuse about some valve cover diaphragm that can tear over time. I denied the PS flush and told them I’d top it off and keep my eye on it given there’s 40k miles left on my warranty.

This is all a shame cause I like the truck, I just don’t trust it to last as long as I’d like it to. Maybe We hold on to it for another year and sell it with the balance of the factory warranty.

This is how low the expansion tank got on the third go-around. I’ve now been to three different dealers with low coolant concerns. First said water pump was weeping, second said expansion tank had a slow leak, third said there’s a cavity in the block that can trap air, which eventually cycles to expansion tank (see pic). I’ll be happy if the coolant doesn’t go disappear but if it does I’ll be curious what the next explanation will be.

Thinking I’ll send an oil sample in to Blackstone for testing to see if they find coolant.
