Living with the 2.5na

My exmod 110 with a 2.5na runs well, doesn't burn much oil but has minor leaks at the transmission and transfer case. The longest trip I've made so far is about 50 miles from home with no issues. This year I'm planning on running down the coast on the slower roads to make the all British field meet in Portland. Mileage will be close to 1k round trip.

What do I need to bring for spares? What should I keep an eye on and what has to be checked before I take off?

Check filters and fuel condition in the tank. Water in the fuel system is a bad time. New filters...no engine ever complained about that.

Check the valves at least. Also if you wanted to, you could check the injection pump timing. Unless you know what you are doing, have a shop do that part.

If you really want to throw money, get the injectors rebuilt. Probably need it anyway if they haven't been done.

Beyond that and making sure there are plenty of fluids, you should be fine. Might even end up running better.

Carrying a spare fuel filter is always a good idea with a diesel.

My 2.5na stranded me twice. First time was due to a clogged fuel filter when I didn't know enough to carry a spare, but that was only a mile from home.

The second time was in Valley of the Gods when the alternator seized up.

It is worth installing a sedimenter and a 12V fuel pump near the main tank to provide the pre-filtering of your diesel and a self bleeding system.

Consider putting an orange triangle on the back.
I once pulled out on a busy road with a 2.5 N/A and a car 5 miles back nearly ran into the back of me.

Earplugs, AAA card, and my phone number....

Ferry to Port Townsend and down 101 would be really nice the time of year, remember that ABFM is traditionally the first rainy weekend at the end of summer.

Exmod should have a sedimenter already.

Sedimenters became standard equipment with the TDI, I think for the first time.
Every "civilian" or X-MOD diesel powered vehicle I have seen before the era of the TDI, did not have a sedimenter.

My 2.5NA-powered Tithonus came with one.

I would say get a spare 200tdi to change out on the way. Or a # 2 pencil to jab in your left eye to distract you from how painfully slow that boat anchor/hamster mill is. Don't forget the rectangular "slow moving vehicle" sign for the back.

So, did mine. One less part to add.

The 2.5 is currently on the garage floor however and the 300 is sitting in the truck. A few more afternoons of fixing surrounding things and I will have it done. If you break down all the way up here, call and I can put you a spare 2.5 in the back of you truck. Though you will go even slower.

Bring a spare 200 TDI with transmission and 1.4 LT230 to match. Also throw in a power steering system while you are at it. Also a full size "slow moving vehicle" triangle for the back so you don't get run over by any old ladies or semi trucks. Good luck!
