Lift Up Handle Winding Window Doors

Picked up some front doors from a project that went a different direction. They are likely the SP4x4 L.U.R.D Doors since they claim to be the only ones that make them. My problem is that I want to run these on a 4 door, and it seems that the rears are not available new, and with limited years running likely not to be found in serviceable shape. I have push button doors that will be coming off when the project begins, but also considering the galvy conversion to series doors from SP, though I hear mixed reviews from good sources.

Aside from knowing I would have to create the internals to bring these to life, looking for some advice from those that dealt with these late 80's unicorns. I am stuck on having lift up doors as I now feel that's the right option for look im going for. Is this worth the effort?

The door latches are the hardest part to find in good shape. Very rarely does a new one pop up on eBay or the like. Plus side is many of the front door sets around are rotted out enough that the door latches are the only valuable pieces left and are pretty cheap. I read that some have opened up the latches and replaced springs and repaired them, never seen it myself. The inner Steel panels seem to hold up alright and can be found used. The rest of the parts can be bought new still (door cards, regulators, inner handles, window felts, spacers and channels). They are decent reproductions but I didn’t get the adjustment out of them I wanted in the door latch area. I could have slotted the door latch mount holes but had already painted the doors. The lock barrel isn’t centered in the hole in the door. You also need +5mm Door hinge bolts. Otherwise they won’t grab the nylon of the lock nut. I love the look but it’s definitely more involved just from a parts search standpoint.

good info. not likely changing up a 90 anytime soon so unless i find some rears or even donors, i may put these shells on the for sale section if I dont throw them into cold storage.

The lift up, roll up, door was unique to the mid 84-86 or so model years.
Have a couple sets of complete doors upstairs in the hoard to include 2nd rows.
Recollection is one set needed new skins.

If you have "lift up, roll down" doors not sure my stuff would interchange.

Frank:
This will get you half way there with the lift up handle:

Rover part numbers are: MTC3230 and MTC3231

These are from 1983 or 1984 and you'll need the upper section.
We are doing a pair in double slide at an angle like the front sliders.
Here are some other sources:

https://www.sp-4x4.com/LAND_ROVER_SECOND_ROW_DOOR_GALVANISED_p/mtc3231.htm

I think these are periodically made by paintman panels in UK, but who knows who makes what now-a-days!

I assume there was a roll down option for 2nd row back then, just not know?

Francis it was called a lift up roll up door (aka lift up wind up) as explained above, not a "roll down door" as you are calling it, and was only fitted for 24 mos or so.

The two part doors Robert linked were offered for an even shorter window of time but are very popular now for those building 5 door soft tops/beach runners. Rears also use a unique pilar side striker. The capping and door tops have been unobtainium for a good while.

Sent you a text.

Got it. I saw that conversion setup up here in PA for a few customer vehicles. Neil said they are hit and miss for quality but Bill S likes them. This is a not going to be a soft top, and is not period correct of course for a 92, but I like them. Maybe I'll just post these up for sale and get the 4 doors in the split conversion option. Then i can roll tops off if I want.

Appreciate all the responses.

You could do that, but the middle row door tops are rare.
Not as scarce as rocking-horse-manure, but sometimes can be hard to locate.

what am i missing?

edit: They have both front and rear conversion kits, and capping for both. 2nd Row is separate for some reason, fronts come with kit.

To help clarify, there are 3 early door styles (pre push button)!!!

1) Lift up handle with roll down AND UP windows.... The front doors are available new including galvanized. All parts are available except the latches. The second row doors are not available new. If anyone has a good condition front right latch, I could do with one...probably need to be from a LHD truck as the RHD trucks ones are all worn out by now.

2) Lift up handle split doors with remote internal latches. These are not available new and many parts are not available.

3) Lift up handle split doors WITHOUT remote internal latches. These are available new including galvanized and second row. The new tops are NOT the same as the ones Land Rover supplied, but you can't have everything. To add to this...ex-MOD trucks used Series 3 door bottoms and Defender door tops... NAS90 Defender doors are similar but have the Defender style door retainers. SP4x4 sells both versions new and galvanized and all parts.

New to market. Originals have been nla for decades. Original 83-84's had galvanized cappings and the unique forward door latch mechanism etc, unique 2 part door cards etc. Not sure how the aftermarket ones would compare.

The second row half doors SP4x4 is selling are built like the Series doors without the remote interior latch. They are not a reproduction of the Defender doors. That would be a difficult task as the latches are NLA.

They all have hot dipped galvanized frames. They sell galvanized door cappings as well, just not with the kit shown above... Cappings are mandatory as they space the window and provide a flat mounting/sealing surface.

You may also run into this dilemma with the reproduction doors and panels and new regulators. There is a much larger gap then stock. A little 3D printer action worked nicely to close the gap behind the window crank.

sorry to bring up an old post - but does anyone have any hot tips on second row door card with the lift up handle / roll up and down windows?

Since this is a different subject, your best bet would be to start a new thread with the summary of what you seek in the title.

Definitely like the idea of these doors for colder month and hard top driving. Wonder if these will fit on a Tithonus. Old topic I know.
