Peter, amazing write-up!

I still think it’s so damn cool you did this in the Disco with 7.5 XZLs. Most the pics I see of the Rubicon are those big, ugly Jeeps with huge 37s. Way cool!

Thanks Jason!

... but next time, it'll be either 255/85 or 8.25!

- sheez... might as well take a tube-buggy then...
:D

LOL, no tube buggy shit. I stick to KvT's concept of not building single-purpose vehicles. The difference between 31" and 34" tire on the 'Con is stacking rocks every 100 yards or not stacking rocks at all; this is driven by the mean under-diff ground clearance of million jeeps on the trail (35-37" tires aired down to single digits with modified 44 or 60 axles).

I hear ya... LOL

When you trailer a Jeep on 42"s to the trailhead... can you really say you did the Rubicon?

I think not.

I have to give the jeep guys proper credit: many of them also frequently run Fordyce Creek and Dusy, and for many of them Rubicon is a weekend trip.

But a slinky on 44s is not something I'd take on a several-thousand-mile trip across the desert.

I'm a web-wheeler anyways these days.

Peter, you earn bonus points for driving to the Rubicon, and wheeling on skateboard wheels.
Breaking your shit, fixing it, and driving home.

As it turned out, the old gal D1 on Rubicon had rear TT worn out to the point of being an open diff, and it was 500 miles away from breaking the eye off a new OME rear shock, and about 1000 miles away from flywheel parting ways with reluctor ring.

That would be a fun tow.

I missed this post last year so thanks for he update as it was a great read! Very impressive that you did it on those size tires - maybe there is a reason the Camel Trophy rigs used them?

Rubicon is on my to do list. It probably will never happen but it?s great to read stories about it. Amazing photos too
