Leak under defender

Just looking for insight on this leak I noticed this morning. Looks like possibly transmission fluid. I just got the truck back after having it worked on for a couple weeks so this is a little annoying. Hoping it is something simple that I can repair myself. Any input would be helpful.

Looks like gear oil , does it smell bad ?

If so probably from the tcase , wash up under there to see where it's leaking from . If it's the PTO, bottom cover , drainplugs or the output shafts it can be done with the case in the truck . Generally otherwise you may have two pull it

Here is what was done

I attached the list. For now I wiped the area clean and waiting to see exactly where it is coming from.

I attached the list. For now I wiped the area clean and waiting to see exactly where it is coming from.

Since they just changed the transfer box fluid, I would assume either the drain or fill plug is loose, the fill plug is missing, or the drain plug is stripped out which is preventing it from tightening fully.

Before you move it around you might want to check the fluid levels. The color looks familiar and I’d be willing to say it’s coming from your tcase. How did it drive? You could put some dye in the tcase, top it off and drive it too.

not for nothing your brake lines also run along the frame rails up there (possibly). There aren't any unions but suffice to say you could have rotted through on the rail.

I'd check the brake fluid reservoir while you're at it.

I have some slow dripping off my the drum on the xfer case. Likely going to change the whole flange kit while it's apart, as it seems cost effective enough. Based on the info above, does the superseded numbers work for my 230 in my 91? LRdirect changed it to LR055719. I guess I need the numbers off my case to be sure...Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can either use the early or the late flange kit. But you would want to use the late flange kit as it has a better mud Shield and seal

Most likely transfer case. Did you smell it? If it smells like gear oil (80W90) then its your transfer case. The transmission fluid should be red (ATF)...unless the shop you had it worked on does not know any better and put gear oil in the transmission also.

You should...that's what Land Rover Specifies for the LT77. Dexron ATF II/III. It's in the manuals and I've called Ashcroft transmissions to see what they use and they use the same.

Doug is probably referring to using redline mtl or royal.purple synchromax both great alternatives to atf that offer better performance and the same compatibility

I am not helping, but I -think- I fixed my front-output leak (seal was worn), and now it seems to be leaking from the top of the transfer box.
You should really clean everything on the box and see where it drips from before making assumption (like I did/do...)! :)
