Land Rovers That Suck

If shipman built it, it is good. Thats his bumper on the front (beefy).

Only thing I would do is put a proper pick up cab top on it.

Never seen this one before, but based on what it is and the winch, I suspect it was built quite a while ago before 90/110/defenders were importable.

Doug Shipman is Rover royalty.
That was my point; well said. Him, Timm Cooper etc.

It’s funny to me because I have been around rovers for almost 25 years so most of these people I know by reputation, if not personally. Shipman and Timm were around for quite a while when I started Some who were “new” back then (Ike Goss comes to mind) are now part of the old guard. Not saying other people can’t do good trucks, and there are others who do make excellent trucks, and I have some people with no experience do excellent builds (the wealth of information internet makes this easier than it was when I started when you had the repair manual and Haynes manual), but the influx of new people into the business has brought some not great trucks around.

Anyway, I rather have the shipman rover posted than some tarted up import. I rather have faded and dented panels than fresh paint and bondo.

And just to say it, that’s a SII or SIIa bulkhead and the 90/110 windscreen frame was modified to fit the early mounts on the bulkhead. The front body panels and doors look like they are off an 83/84 90 or 110 with the SII headlight surrounds. It looks like it has an 88in wheel base and based on the reference to a RRC chassis, it seems that was shortened and customized. Lots of galvy bits. Lockers, winch etc. My guess is if you saw it in person and knew what you were looking at you would be very impressed. Sadly, the pics are limited and I have not seen it in person.

Well, I certainly learned a few things here. Don’t judge a book by its cover comes to mind. In my limited experience it sure looked odd, but maybe there’s a method to the madness. While I regret implying that it “sucked” (I now stand corrected) I don’t regret the post as it initiated a great conversation. I come here to learn and share and I am not disappointed.

No offense taken here. The rover world is the best people I have met. If you own a rover you must be an accepting, tolerate person IME.

PS I will still give shipman a hard time for doing the newer vent window cranks. 61 should be the dial types. 🤣

I can think of a few Rover people that suck ass BUT most are great people. I'll be off-roading and camping with several awesome Rover folks in Israel next month. Pictures to follow for sure.

Its been awhile since I’ve heard Ike’s name mentioned. When I had the 109 he found the OEM work light with a really long cord that plugged into the dash receptacle for me. Really cool period piece.

In regards to the Shipman build, I’m sure it’s well made, but appears as a massive mismatch of parts in an aesthetically insignificant way. I’ll grant that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and different strokes for different folks. Although I’m sure it has the potential to outperform many off-road, I wouldn’t even look at the ad twice for 1/2 the asking price. It has also rid itself of any historical significance other than the title.
