"Help shape the future of Land Rover"

The vehicles aren't the same, for sure. I wonder if anyone will struggle to decide which one is best for them.

What is also funny about the vehicles not being the same. New Defender owners compare them to the new Bronco and Wranglers. They are are definitely not the same class of vehicle either. There isn't even a convertible Defender.

His is a volume game, getting a small piece of a big market instead of a big piece of a small market.
I don’t buy into it. LR sales numbers in the US have increased since the mid 2000s slump they had. This was primarily the result of new additional models. In 2004 they had the Discovery, Freelander, and Range Rover. Then they added the Sport, Evoque, Velar, Disco Sport, and Defender. They offered only a few models so the competition ate them alive. They put out more models and their sales are up. This is naturally expected as you either were buying a Land Rover or another make. More vehicle models means more potential buyers.

McGovern’s success is based solely on small SUVs for the brand. Every other vehicle he has ruined with the desire to make it ultra luxury and some form of “art”. It’s not.

They had a chance at digging into the 200,000+ Wrangler sales and 40,000 Gladiator sales per year in the US. Not even counting sales of other equivalent vehicles like the Ranger, Hilux, L200, LC, D-Max, etc. overseas. They did not go for it. They targeted their Discovery 5 buyers. He completely changed the brand to something that it didn’t need to be. There was a clear distinction between LAND Rover and RANGE Rover and he blended it all into one massive cluster of bland luxury vehicles with weird awkward styling that is honestly comical. I laugh every time I see a D5 ahead of me. I think I want a Defender when I see them at first then I think harder about how I hate that side panel, the back door, and the seating options for the price. It’s not built for off-road. All that electric crap was an attempt to claim it was when in reality it’s just options on a minivan.

Other than actual sales figures, all we have are opinions.
My opinions on new Defender:
Is it what the Defender purist wanted? No.
I think it is more of a Discovery 5, as styling flows from LR4.
Park one next to an RRC and I can see the similarities.

Stellantis owns Jeep. They primarily are an auto group as seen below.
152B in revenue.

Tata Group owns JLR.
Tata is 34B revenue company, of which autos are a small part. Solar tech, home appliances, clothing, online pharmacy, grocery stores, major IT…
Here’s Tata’s offerings (Of which Tata auto seems aimed at their gigantic home market, and aimed at younger connected demographic. PS: Tata’s home market is ~1.4B people just in India.

Jeep basically has 5X revenue of specific auto dollars behind them, and a truly global market. Is it any wonder their research and marketing is stronger? Pretty much anyone in the decision chain works for a CAR company, where Tata food chain work for a relatively small global conglomerate.

As I said, all opinion based. I can only hope they will listen to enthusiasts.

By the way, did the NY hedge manager, the Miami-Dade soccer mom, and the Minnesota neurologist all get the same invite to input? Cause that is who is buying new JLR, not us busted knuckles idjits.

This 30th anniversary edition is a 2023 marketing tribute to a 1993 marketing event. I hope all you traditionalists are happy now. Lol.
What dreck!

There's so much inaccuracy in the reporting/journalism and the marketing... when the NAS 110 was launched, it wasn't called a "First Edition." In fact, it was promised to be the only 110s NA would see, so maybe more accurately, the "last edition?" Fuji White is not the "same exterior as the original." And the price is offensive.

But, JLR/LRNA certainly are not unique to making a grab... from the 911 Sport Classic to the Honda Pilot, there isn't an automaker out there that won't try to appeal to a select few through their wallets.

Well, there is one born every minute. Have had order in since Oct 21. Dealer just called and offered the 30th, will be in by end of month. Wife wants her Defender. So I got tatty badges and in 30 years it will be worth… $7K?

While there are some useless features imho, the 30th is also how I’d configure one in general. Congrats on getting one!

My order got pushed out 2 or 3 times already. First week of July now.

One wonders if the 30th is the last hurrah of the 4 banger. As we went from 2021 to 2022 to 2023 in our order process (had to keep reconfiguring) the options on the 4cyl were pared down. Maybe the future of land rover is no longer a base model in the 50’s.
