Hannibal rack order

Hey guys, I planned on ordering a Hannibal rack from South Africa today. Shipping for one rack is $570, but goes down in multiples. Anyone close to Austin interested in splitting freight?

for what it's worth, I had a hannibal rack, but will go with Front Runner for my next one. Hannibal and FR both make great racks, but they just don't have the US footprint anymore it seems, plus they have more accessory options. I also prefer the FR racks because the slats run lengthwise, unlike the Hannibal, so there's less wind disturbance and noise.

I think you might be mistaken. The Hannibal rack runs lengthwise and the front runner, side to side. That was a big reason I went for the Hannibal. They are supposed to be quieter..

I have the Hannibal rack. Straight up, it's stronger than the FR and many of the FR accessories fit.

Slats on the Hannibal are North-South, (lengthwise) not East -West (left to right) as on the FR. Weight distribution and gutter clamping on the Hannibal is spread out over the length of the gutter, on the FR it's on 4 points.

I think the key to strength that the Hannibal has solid pieces running the length of the rack. FR hasn't got that. The side rails are 2 pieces joined in the middle.

I stand corrected! It's been a few years. Good luck. It's a great rack, regardless.

Hannibal racks are definitely nicer than a Front Runner rack, but from what I understand they are a nightmare to deal with these days. I would be leery of sending them money.

Quality products,arguably the best available.
Ea of their US agents have gone down due to lack of support/ ability to fulfill orders from parent.

I talked to you guys 6 months ago about the used rack. Between shipping and the crappy value of the rand, it was only a several hundred dollar difference for brand new.

Sounds like you are assuming that once you pay for a Hannibal rack from Hannibal, you will actually receive it.

Have there been issues with the FR not being strong enough or failing? It's rated for 660lbs, but they have loaded over 1500lbs without failure. I've had 4 adults on my roof before without issue

Ugh. I didn't want to hear about the delivery stuff. They have been really good communication wise, so i think I'll give them a chance. I'll definitely use my credit card. Thanks for the input everyone.

Most any rack is strong enough to handle a load much greater than what a defender is supposed to cary on its roof-330 lbs total including the rack.

I wouldn't base your decision solely on what I have said. Just make sure you do a little research before you order.

Personally, I would just buy the used one even if it is close in price to new. The rack and mounts are aluminum, so it won't be rusty.

I purchased my Hannibal rack locally (used) but did buy a rear ladder and awning from Nene Overland. No issues with availability, shipped fairly quick.

Rather than online ordering I called to place the order, figured that service may be a bit quicker by actually talking to someone.

They usually have a sale between Christmas and New Years with some pretty good savings. If I recall, I got the awning for 40% off.

I ended up ordering from Hannibal. $1700us shipped air freight to Austin airport. I think $550 of that was shipping. Powder coated full length rack with side rails and ladder. Everything has gone smooth so far. Supposedly shipping out next week. I'll let everyone know when it arrives. Fingers crossed I'll have it by Xmas...
