This seems like a lot of effort to go through to make the car function outside of the way it was designed
Have you not met me? 🤣 And I am sure Prado’s all don’t have power columns so designed is debatable.

If it’s not a Land Rover, I want it so that it will never break. I have PTSD or maybe Stockholm syndrome from 90s-early 2000s North American Land Rover products.

The internet tells us what issues are and buying a 14 (21 if you count the GX470) year old design I have 14 years of collective experience to go off. The steering columns do break so if I turn it off when new, it won’t break.

Ya, on the grill, the “black edition” I got has black chrome around the predator grill (rather than regular chrome on all the other GX) and the insert was changed in 2020 to the teeth center. I don’t mind if and it sort of grew on me.

I have driven an LX570 (the Lexus version of the TLC), albeit briefly, and the GX drives similar, but a bit more sporty if you can believe that. The reviewers say the same. And the GX is still pretty big, but narrower than the TLC/LX. Think Range Rover v. Range Rover Sport.

As far as build quality/reliability, the build quality is the same, if not better (supposedly the plant where GX is made is slightly better than the one that LX/TLC is made) and the reliability is better by a little bit as only the luxury trim has the fancy shocks whereas most LX/TLC got them. Also, the 4.6 V8 in the GX is supposed to be a bit more reliable than the 5.7 V8 but splitting hairs. The engines are effectively the same, it’s just that the 5.7 has a longer stroke and the 4.6 is detuned. GX other than luxury which has the really nice semi-analine leather get nu-luxe which is a really nice fake leather. LX/TLC get regular leather (and semi-analine on the higher LX trims).

So far my only complaint is that you need the Lexus computer to turn off the feature where the power adjust steering wheel retracts back to allow easier access when you shut off the vehicle. Trauma from broken L322 Range Rover steering columns makes me want to turn it off so maybe I will go back to the dealer to do that, but I know where the fuse is and I am just going to pull the fuse for now. After setting them initiallh, I have never adjusted a steering wheel on anything I own (especially defenders lol).

I am also going to pull the foam filter on the secondary air pump intake and fit the K&N breather. I bought the UNI brand breather for the GX. Apparently the foam degrades over time (like 12 years) and kills the pump. I did the same mod on my tacoma with the K&N and I think the UNI brand is better. If you read the Toyota/Lexus forums that’s about the only fault, other than frame rust, that there is. It’s night and day between our beloved old defenders and them.

One other issue is that bought the Curt hitch because the Lexus one is on stop sale (wiring is already there). The Curt is only 5k lbs v. 6500 for the Lexus hitch which has additional side mounts to the frame rails.

Always considered the GX as a Lexus badge version of the 4 Runner.

Kind of sort of. They are on a similar platform and built in the same plant, but there are a significant number of differences beyond the Lexus interior. The GX460 is a Toyota Land Cruiser prado but with Lexus styling and badging and with the 4.6 V8/6 speed auto. 4Runners and some prado have the 4.0 V6. I was going to get a 4runner and with the tech in the Lexus I probably should, but you know, it’s green.

Not to detract from the GX discussion, nor to be too Grinchy, but at this festive time of the year, the Grenadier brings the words of Ebeneezer Scrooge to mind... "there's more of gravy than of grave about you." Land Rover translation: "there's more of Trooper II than of Defender about you." That's not necessarily a bad thing... but I'm confused why the little door has to open before the big one.

In the late 90s I saw a white trooper with the license plate FAUX 110

A vanity plate idea for future grenadier owners ….

Last I was tracking, the first deliveries were scheduled for this month. Has anyone heard of anything actually happening or did Ineos delay it again?

No clue on that…. How much are they asking? And do they have any service affiliates or are they going for just regional audiences? It would help it to be on list of new car potential, but it has to be somewhat convenient to repair. I loved the video, as simplistic as it was. those more simple things like seat adjustment I appreciate.

Email from Ineos yesterday-

The North American release of the Grenadier 4X4 is getting ever closer. And as it does we want to make sure you’re absolutely up to date with all the latest news and production timelines.

PRODUCTION TIMING

Good news. Our North American production schedule is on track, and we'll start building vehicles for you – as 2024 Model Year – from September 2023. Working back from that, we plan to publish full launch specifications, pricing, and our vehicle configurator in the second quarter next year. We acknowledge that this is a delay in our timing, because these timings were previously for quarter 1 – but unfortunately this is a knock-on from the supply issues that have challenged our production ramp-up for other markets.

But to reiterate, we are now building and dispatching vehicles at Hambach, and the production timing for North America remains on track.

Any word on dealer selection? I’ve been wishing that BMW dealers would have an advantage.

So this event in Phily, is there more info on it? Can anyone attend, or just for those with preorders? Anyone know where in Phily it is supposed to be?

Maybe we can make an event out of it, anyone know of a trail system not far from the event? There is the Trans NJ Trail that's not too far away...

... but I'm confused why the little door has to open before the big one.

Physics. It's hard to get doors to seal in mid air. You need something to seal against. I guess it could be done with some complicated rubber and plastic "combo" seals that interlock. I would expect a short life span and frequent replacement.

Oh! You mean "Why doesn.t the big door open first because that's all I have on my Defender"?

Because Ineos can upcharge for a sixth door. If the big one opened first no one would bother with the small one. That and because Sir Jim needs a place to store his trainers.
