I can go with that, although I'd never have thought of it. Perhaps Ineos is taking this off road thing a bit too seriously?
As an alternative, or second purpose, maybe it ties in with a roof rack and/or awning? Does look like a good spot to hang a solar shower.
Glad to see the Grenadier won't have artistic blanks (newspeak for blind spots) where rear side windows should be, something Rover found necessary with the Pretender's unibody construction. Gerry McGovern really is creative when he imagines we'll believe it's there for aesthetic reasons. The good part is that anyone can get that factory updated look just by painting big squares on their windows. Black roofs, Puma bonnets, metallic paint and sawtooth wheels have really caught on. That might be next.

As far as modern land rovers go, they definitely cost more to maintain in they are diesels. Call a dealership and get a quote for any service on a diesel and then ask about a petrol. It will likely be double the price.

This post is quite timely as I’m just leaving an RV park north of Richmond helping a friend of a friend who is traveling to NYC and had 13 miles until no engine restarts due to a DEF quality fault. They tried to go to the dealer but they are booked for 1 month. A local Land Rover specialist couldn’t figure it out and caused DEF dosing faults to be on the display.
Ripped it all out on the Mercedes, reprogrammed the ECU.(fraction of the repair cost, but I know there are restrictions in some places that won't allow it) Overall it was less than a quarter the cost to repair everything. Not sure how to justify a $10,000 repair on a $5,000 car that is in excellent condition other than an exhaust system.

Light diesels are a dying breed both here and in Europe. Even the 3500-5500 diesels (Cummins/Powerstroke/duramax) are endangered. Turbo gasser big blocks are coming.

If the alpine windows aren't alpine windows, then wtf are they?

I saw the preproduction model they built (001) in person.

There is a hollow metal bar in that cavity. In one of the marketing stills, they used it to tie down a Christmas tree. I put my foot on the tire, and grabbed the bar to pull myself up to the roof. It's reasonably sturdy. But it has some give when you pull on it.

The roof is load bearing, which is probably why they're there. I do think the vehicle would look cleaner without them.

Yes. They are essentially tie-downs/grab handles. And the roof has rails to place the load on. I think I remember seeing something that looked like it tied in the front end as well, but I can’t find a pic. Might have been in one of the recent videos.

My brain says never ever buy the first vehicle of any generation, especially the first vehicle a company has ever made, but budget allowing, I'm in. Diesel was a bummer but I'll get over it I guess. Everyday this is more of what I imagined a 2021 defender would be.

Impressed. Design reminds me of the early Range Rover interiors. Again, it's clearly the real new Defender. Couldn't help but chuckle at how far they took the jet-fighter theme. My sons would love abuse that TOOT button.

Lol. 🍻 for sure. Luckily an October pre order coincides with a massive pay scale jump. 😅
We are working under an expired contract. Hopefully we can hammer it out and the retro check comes about when they release trucks for sale. My Rangie is 8 years old but fingers crossed it keeps chugging along till then.
