I mean,.... are we actually bordering on concern over the BMW engine versus the Land Rover blocks we are running right now? Whatever shortcomings the BMW diesel has, aren't we all immune to them by now?

I'm running the BMW B57 right now, and although we have not had it long, I can't complain. But I'm sure the engine will be built specifically for the Grenadier, so there may be hope for a robust, off-road proof computer paired with it.

People are just trying to complain to justify their LR loyalty and their feelings of never wanting to give up their old vehicles. News flash! If you like your old Defender, you can keep your old Defender. There is no reason to be scared of any BMW engine with all the nonsense issues the LRNA motors end up having.

I am in the market for a new vehicle. LR is off the list with the new Defender. The 4 door Bronco or the Grenadier may take the slot. If not I’ll probably just buy a GX460 because the GX470 that is 13 years old is still going strong and while I don’t love the grill there is nothing wrong with those vehicles.

Just received advanced marketing info from Ford on the new Bronco. First off the presentation was really nice and informative. It also seems they are pushing the go over any terrain (GOAT) capability.
For sure I am interested in it.

It's not that people believe the classic was the pinnacle of reliability, it's that it should have been, given its purpose. This is a fresh start and enthusiasts want them to succeed where LR struggled for decades. The industry has made strides in reliability over the years, so the concern over the BMW engine is relative to current industry standards and its modern competitors including the new Defender, Bronco, Land Cruiser, Patrol, etc.

Is there an example of a BMW engine being used in the type of service to which a Grenadier is meant to be employed?
The gx470 is great and so is the gx460 and both have very durable, proven engines. I’m more familiar with the 470 since it’s found in the land cruiser/LX, and it’s not uncommon to see them go several hundred thousand miles. Wondering if BMW has done the same?

I asked on their FB page if they were bringing the diesel & they said, yes. I was also surprised that I got a reply within 24hrs too !

My biggest issue is a lack of manual transmissions available. Every car I've ever driven would be better with a 3rd pedal.

I disagree. Modern automatics with more than 4 forward gears are great. Off-road they will always be better in my opinion. On road they will always be better. They are not as much fun to drive, though.

Same in airplanes. I think throttle, prop, and mixture levers are cool and quite pleasing to fiddle with to get an aircraft to be the most efficient. You know what’s better? One lever that does it all automatically.

Make sense. If there is a suitable plant available for purchase, it saves a lot of time using that over building a plant from scratch. But, most likely it is bargaining ploy to get better deals out of the Wales government. You do not become the richest man in Britain by playing nicely.

But the soon to be closed Ford plant is right next door. Seems like a no brainer to used at least a building that has 4 walls and a roof over building from scratch as nice a new building would look.

Agreed on the bargaining ploy. Makes sense especially on the same day or same week they show the truck off. Lots of news about it.

"The Land Rover Defender is an iconic vehicle which is part of Land Rover’s past, present and future," the company said. "Its unique shape is instantly recognizable and signifies the Land Rover brand around the world."

This argument was finished when they decided to make the "defender", a Kia.

Ever since I got a passing glance at a new Defender a few weeks ago, I've been looking for another. It occurred to me that I catch Jeeps, GWagons, Toyotas, and vans of all types out of the corner of my eye all the time. The iconic shape is programmed in. But I almost missed that new Defender even though I was looking right at it. And then yesterday I finally... oh, nope, that's just a Ford Flex...

And that sums it up very well.
There is no mistaking a Series Rover - one may not know a II, IIa, III yet it is a Series.
D1, DII, even LR 3&4 pretty recognized.
Classic Rangies no doubt.
And of course 90s and 110s.
Now it is a blur that just melds into the scene.
