Curious, do you think a handheld radio will work for this trip or should I pickup a proper setup?

Radioddity GM-30 GMRS Radio, Handheld 5W Long Range Two Way Radio for Adults, GMRS Repeater Capable, with NOAA Scanning & Receiving, Display SYNC, for Off Road Overlanding, 1 Pack https://a.co/d/d31L3yb

Awesome day on at Greek Peak yesterday. The RTV courses are almost finished. Many more trails added to the extensive network. I swear you could spend all day on the mountain driving.
JLR joined us and is amazed that people have volunteered to come from as far away as Alabama. JLR has made a major commitment to the event.
Wrapping up the layout of the RTV today. With diggers skidsteers blood and sweat!

Questions?
I may or may not have a chance to get the terribly low hanging UK shovel hitch off of my 110 before the event... will I get stuck constantly?

I'm wondering the same thing. Would also love to hear folks' opinions on which radios they like/dislike. There's a pretty big price delta between the cheaper stuff on Amazon and Midland/Rugged, I'm not sophisticated enough in this area to really be able to tell the difference.

After the shit JLR pulled at the Destination Defender event the shouldn’t be allowed to use this event for adventure signaling on their Instagram.

@John Z

I have two of these: https://www.amazon.com/GXT1000VP4-Channel-GMRS-Two-Way-Radio/dp/B001WMFYH4?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1
I like them because they're the ones I have. I have nothing to compare them to, and although I'm sure something more sophisticated would have advantages, these have worked fine the few times I've used them. Many people here have forgotten more about radio than I'll ever know, but I wonder if you'll really need more power or range at an event like this. Handheld is also nice if you want to walk around.

Are these all on the same channel? So you get to listen to chatter of spotters and have them talk you through? I guess I'm missing the point given these trails are not more than a level 3 how much would these actually be needed? I miss the days of the simple CB being the standard...LOL.

It's less for spotters and more for connecting with trail rides and other groups on the mountain.

Not many trails here would require a spotter, but there's certainly some hairy stuff if you're looking for it

If you've registered for the event, you'll get texts with the discount on Midland GMRS units. You'll also get texts during the event to alert you to things happening.

Terrain is mixed conditions. Some trails are well suited to "I don't want to scratch my new $100k Defender/Range Rover" and plenty more to test others with "experienced" trucks.

@hillstrubl that DC yota in the first pic is sweet. So are the rovers, but thought I would mention that guy...thanks for posting.
The Land Cruiser (79 series, I think?) the Safe Xtract guys had was super cool. Really clean LHD truck, and the owner had done some work to it based on the conversation I overheard. Once they're importable to the US, I expect they'll be popular here.

haha - I'm just out of frame in that pic.

That was the family from San Diego that drove cross country for the event in that NAS 90. The nicest folks! Roberto and Diego got that 90 on it's side mid-day Saturday but were able to self recovery with the help from some people.

We rode Schitt's Creek and then the trails near the top 304-308 (Thanks ZG!) and grabbed 216 on the way down.

Bill Burke drove up and helped them out get the rubber side down using their own winch.
Bill is an incredible guy.

Yes, Roberto was blown away with how much he learned from Bill.

I believe some other folks were involved with the recovery too - IIRC Roberto said one of the RN guys told him to pull the plugs, cycle the engine and said it would be smoky going down the road but to run it out and back for a while to clean things up.

That was Steven, and glad he did suggest it as there was quite a bit of oil in there.
