Curious, do you think a handheld radio will work for this trip or should I pickup a proper setup?

Awesome day on at Greek Peak yesterday. The RTV courses are almost finished. Many more trails added to the extensive network. I swear you could spend all day on the mountain driving.
JLR joined us and is amazed that people have volunteered to come from as far away as Alabama. JLR has made a major commitment to the event.

I may or may not have a chance to get the terribly low hanging UK shovel hitch off of my 110 before the event... will I get stuck constantly?

I'm wondering the same thing. Would also love to hear folks' opinions on which radios they like/dislike. There's a pretty big price delta between the cheaper stuff on Amazon and Midland/Rugged, I'm not sophisticated enough in this area to really be able to tell the difference.

After the shit JLR pulled at the Destination Defender event the shouldn’t be allowed to use this event for adventure signaling on their Instagram.

Destination defender was pretty boring. I actually checked out my hotel early n went home

I like them because they're the ones I have. I have nothing to compare them to, and although I'm sure something more sophisticated would have advantages, these have worked fine the few times I've used them. Many people here have forgotten more about radio than I'll ever know, but I wonder if you'll really need more power or range at an event like this. Handheld is also nice if you want to walk around.

Are these all on the same channel? So you get to listen to chatter of spotters and have them talk you through? I guess I'm missing the point given these trails are not more than a level 3 how much would these actually be needed? I miss the days of the simple CB being the standard...LOL.

It's less for spotters and more for connecting with trail rides and other groups on the mountain.

Not many trails here would require a spotter, but there's certainly some hairy stuff if you're looking for it

If you've registered for the event, you'll get texts with the discount on Midland GMRS units. You'll also get texts during the event to alert you to things happening.

Terrain is mixed conditions. Some trails are well suited to "I don't want to scratch my new $100k Defender/Range Rover" and plenty more to test others with "experienced" trucks.
