Great long-form essays

I love a really good story. Particularly, I love the long-form nonfiction essay, the kind of tale that's long enough to spend an evening reading in bed, but not so long that you put it down and lose interest to the inevitable distraction.

I read one tonight that I want to share, plus another from a few years back.

If you have a great example on this format, please post it up!

Here's the first one: the true story of the MS Estonia, an oceangoing car ferry that sank in 1994. I don't want to give too much away but this one is really tough to read. Terrifying, riveting, and tragic, but true. A portrait of what happens to humanity when all order breaks down.

Here's the other one. This is the true story of a German family on vacation in the USA, who drove a minivan deep into Death Valley in the summertime. One bad decision led to another and the van got flat tires and then became stuck on a sandy road. There was no sign of the family, only an empty beer bottle left near a bush. The search parties never found any other sign of them. Some time later, a couple of off-duty search-and-rescue guys became interested in the case and decided to do their own investigation. This is their story.

The Hunt for the Death Valley Germans I read after having driven close to their route.
I keep reminding myself that, with experience and all, we are frequently one wrong decision from our demise.

Now I wish somebody would write an essay on KAL 007, but the Wikipedia page is already longer than that.

Speaking of AT stories, this one's about Baltimore Jack. My best friend thru-hiked the trail in '99 right after college and knew him well. I met him once briefly at the Doyle Hotel during a party for thru-hikers.

This is in no way "long form" pros or sophisticated literature, but a fun little read about an original 110. Is there another thread this might be better for?
