Gerry McGovern (New Defender Related)

His dismissive attitude towards opinions other than his own makes me even more dismissive toward the new "Defender". I'm glad the classic was made for so many years parts will be available, because I expect to still have mine when they stop producing this latest version. Apparently the minority of people who don't like it are not expert enough to say the design is wrong - Is this guy for real?

Every interview with this clown I read pushes me further away from the current brand. He identifies with a different crowd. Not what made the brand what it is. Look at the number of "Range Rovers" you can purchase.

The MG F & E-XE and the Freelander were all terrible.
Ego is often the gateway to self-proclaimed greatness.
The series and Defenders were sold to both sides of the pub, where as the marque has now abandoned the working mans side.
Reminds me of that poverty sucks Rolls Royce poster.

That is a load of hog wash. If McGovern believed anything he said in that interview, he would have demanded they call his new thing something different than "Defender".

When I introduce someone to a classic Land Rover such as a Defender, and they see the Land Rover badge, they're often confused. I then explain that the products they used to make, and the company they were, bear no relationship to the producer of dandy status icons they are today.

I believe a proper Defender replacement will come along as soon as this guy is let go. The new D is a refreshing change from the monotonous body styling they have been tweaking into different models the past few years, but styling-wise they didn't keep it close enough to the original for anyone to really be excited about it. It's sad that one man and his ego brought down an icon.

He wanted to put his finger print on this model...His dissertation of retro design or even anything that links it to the 70 years past is mind numbing. I wonder what Ford thinks of that with the Bronco coming up? Or Jeep - Or BMW - Or Porsche - Or Merc - or Rolls - or Jag - Or Bentley - oh never mind what do they know as compared to this "designer".

I have a degree in Architecture - as a student I quickly realized there are basic things in design that are wrong to anyone - i.e. not enough windows or a ceiling height to low, how you move from one space to another etc. But there are a whole lot of things that if your passionate enough and if you regurgitate enough BS at the wall people will say "oh gee I see that now - I guess your right". This douche-bag is the queen BS'er.

Im not looking for a retro reproduction - But I would like to see something that ties it back to the history of the brand - other than the green oval...

He is basically saying - "look those traditionalist (i.e. customers) who bought into the whole camel trophy and the Tread Anywhere motto - they are never going to buy another Land Rover so fuck them. Even through they are the ones who paid for the lights to be on and they have uber brand loyalty - screw them I have spend my life designing and I now know best. All they know are winch points, how to pack bearings and push the engineering to the extremes true neanderthals in ever sense of the knuckle dragging world of it. I am a god damn designer I take blank sheets of paper and make cars out of them - let me see them do that! Oh and I really don't care because this Defender model is SOOOO yesterday - I have moved on to fucking up the Range Rovers....and I don't care if you like those either."

RIP Mr. Wilkes.

I’ve been thinking that its time for him to “retire”.

Can anyone put uo a new D versus original 1998 Freelander image?

He should work at Audi or Lexus...he would have a clean sheet a paper to design the SUV he wants without destroying an Icon.

Where was this bullet when he unveiled the Freelander?

While I don’t like the guy or his design philosophy, to be fair the Freelander in Europe was the best-selling four-wheel-drive vehicle for five years running, straight through to 2002.
