GEMS MAF Sensor

Any warnings before I spray down my MAF? 188k miles and it’s never been cleaned. Starting to have hot start problems so I figured I’d start with cheap and simple.

I've done my Lucas sensors several time and one GEMS with no issues. I used an electrical aerosol from CRC.. ymmv

You probably do not have an issue with your mass air flow sensor. Is it running rough after a hot start? If so, i would be looking at the injectors leaking down

Best way I can describe it is if it's warmed up, it takes usually two separate turns of the key to get it to start but once it's started there's no issue other than running rich. The exhaust is pretty strong. I sprayed the MAF real good, now waiting for it to completely dry. I figure it can't hurt to clean it at 188K.

I recall some folks years ago said Ford Mustang injectors were good replacements. Anyone know of there's truth to that tale?

Well I’m probably going to jinx myself but I put everything back together and made absolutely sure the O-ring was clean/pliable and tighten everything down. She started fine. I drove it for 20 mins and made sure the engine was at op temp (this truck runs at 179-192 all day long). Got home and stopped and then started real well. We’ll see how long this holds.

I don’t have any experience with non factory injectors. The original ones last decades, so I don’t see a reason to look for alternatives. You can have your original ones cleaned and tested for like $15/injector. A rusty fuel rail could also be the root cause of an injector issue.

I use CRC’s MAF cleaner. You can also remove the screen from the maf for better access to the little port where I believe the inside bimetallic strip is housed. Don’t waste a whole can on it at one time.
