Gearing/Speed/RPM Questions 300tdi

Tdi engines dont like high rpm. Rather than gear it to rev high it is far better to increase boost and fueling and let the turbo do the work- ie load it rather than rev it.
If max egt temp is 1000 engine is not properly tuned and timed.

Ran up a 6% hill for 1.5 miles. 45 mph, EGT went up to 1000, boost was pegged 14- that's the end of the gauge.

Increase the fueling. That is a really low EGT. You want to aim for 1300 F at sustained full throttle.

If he wants maximum safe power, that is where he should be.

It will make a big difference. 1000 F is really low.

I mean, where do you place the sender? Mine is on the EGR block off plate and I was always under the impression that that location was convenient but not ideal. Since it can make a couple hundred degrees of difference, I think it’s worth specifying.

At the inlet of the turbo. The tip should be centered in the main flow. You can do that on the EGR plate. You need to make sure the tip is inserted far enough and bent to be in the middle of the flow. Make sure it is an Inconel sheathed thermocouple.

On a 200 def engine I put it right under the turbo , drill and tap the manifold.

On a 300/200 disco I use the egr plate and a longer right angle probe

Boost is a VDO gauge that tops out at 15- taken from the back of the manifold.

EGT probe is in the EGR plate in the manifold. EGT probe is the one that Red90 told me to order years ago when the last one failed. Wired into a Madman gauge. The EGT will go higher than 1000, I'm just afraid to melt another motor. The IP was rebuilt and ran too lean and we fried a cylinder that resulted in the rebuild of the new motor after it was installed.

She's been tuned a bit, she blows black smoke when I drive her like a V8. But no more white smoke. Thank heavens, I was so over all of that.

What I really probably need is a lesson in how to drive the 300tdi correctly and what the max RPM, EGT and boost should be given the set up and after market enhancements.

It's what you and Red90 told me to buy a few years ago :)

I can't find the details but for some reason I have that it is 60mm in my mind.

Unless the probe isn't pushed most of the way in, your tuning is way off if you only see 1000 degrees on the EGT.

Something isn't set up right on your IP

This IP has been the devil. It will go higher than 1000 degrees, I backed off because of RPM. What is the max EGT you would hold for a consistent uphill and for how long? Thinking about sustained uphills in the canyons.

I use 1250 as a hard max all the time. you can literally do anything you want from 1250 and under for as long as you want, forever.

A TLDR on how I tune:

Set timing 1.54 stock , 1.6 performance
Set boost to desired max ~20 psi
Set fueling so that you keep the numbers below the above temps and don't make too much smoke
