FS: 1988 Land Rover 90, LHD, 300TDI, $21,000

I bought this 90 in January 2014. Probably overpaid, but don't really care. I bought the truck when I was stationed out in Phoenix and it made the trip over to Florida a few years ago. It has been my daily driver for most of the time I owned it. It was supposed to be a keeper, but the Air Force has decided I need to move back to the UK, and the 90 is not making the trip. The truck lived most of its life in Italy and it shows. The truck had less than 160,000 KM when I bought it. I swapped over to UK TD5 gauges so the speedo now reads MPH, but I can't really say how many miles are on the truck at this point.

The good:

- Chassis is rust free.

- 300TDI + R380 + 1.2 LT230 swap. New injection pump, new injectors, recent new head w/metal head gasket and ARP studs, fresh timing belt.

- New front calipers. New disks on all 4 corners. (originally had 10 spline axles, I swapped over to Disco axles for the rear disk brakes)

- Complete rewire with Kwik Wire generic harness. Original harness caught fire a couple years ago. It had cracks everywhere, so all new wiring went in. Factory switch gear works with no mods and most connectors are now weather sealed.

- Wright Off Road mat system up front and Land rover rubber mat in rear

- Superpro poly suspension bushings

- Air conditioning. I used the Nostalgic Air UD-140 under-dash evaporator and parallel flow condenser. I had an AC shop in Phoenix run the lines and charge it up. It was just serviced a month ago and blows very cold.

- New rubber seals on the windshield frame and front doors. Most are genuine Land Rover, including the front doors. It's hard to believe the difference in quality from aftermarket. I changed over to the newer style lower door seal too.

- ARB front winch bumper and an NAS rear step bumper. I don't have a winch installed, never got around to it.

Need to know:

- I have no history on the engine. The entire injection system is new and the head was replaced a few years ago. The cylinder bores still had cross hatching and no scoring when I replaced the head. There is minimal blow by.

- There are a couple small rust holes through the driver's side foot well. I was looking at getting them welded, but haven't found a local shop with a quick enough turn around.

- There is minimal corrosion on the doors, but there are a couple spots here and there.

- The rear tub corner caps that hold the tail lamps had corrosion. I pulled them, cleaned everything up, epoxy primed and painted. The color is a flat green that doesn't match the overall paint.

- The paint in general is not spectacular. It looks like a quick job and the hood has peeled under 7 years of continuous sun. I bought the truck to run trails and explore around Arizona so the paint is not a big concern for me.

- The rear door frame has been reinforced, reskinned, and a MudUK door card installed. Once again, the paint doesn't match but the door is solid.

I have completely gone through this truck over the past six months. I have changed the filters and engine oil, replaced the timing belt, replaced the ball joint for the A-frame, fixed some minor leaks, replaced the serpentine belts, adjusted the valves, fresh coolant, new engine mounts, and more. It is a solid runner and I have no hesitation driving it anywhere. It easily made the trip from Phoenix to the Florida Panhandle a few years ago and I would do it again.

I also have an extra set of 5 Boost wheels and 8.25in XZLs I can throw in for good measure.

I can't keep it. I have looked around and solid LHD 90s are going for more than the asking price. I had every intention of keeping it forever and spent money accordingly. I am in Panama City, FL. If you have a shop or person that you trust for a pre-purchase inspection, I am willing to drive within reason.

$21,000 - Once again, I can't keep it. If you are interested, lets talk.

I have a few more pictures. The truck is sitting at work, and I can get more pictures as requested.

You can see the beginnings of some rust through in the driver's foot well. This is a recent development. Somehow water gets through the clutch pedal housing and collects in that spot. The torrential rain that we've had in the past few months obviously didn't help things. The passenger side is good.

I will get more pictures of the engine bay and chassis tomorrow. Until then, just dirty, not rusty.

Original gauge cluster and door bottoms. The original speedometer shows 134,000km. I average about 5000mi a year with the truck, so it's at around 100,000 mi at this point.

300tdi with head studs. I'm not a fan of torque to yield bolts. There's no ARP kit for the 300tdi but luckily someone did the research and listed the part numbers on one of the Brit forums.

Good luck on your tour. Visited Lakenheath as part of my CCF when F4d’s were stationed there. Gawd those things were awesome!
