Fasteners?

I am currently looking into replacing the fasteners connecting my doors to the chassis as they are starting to rust.

I thought I saw a discussion somewhere about stainless steel causing more corrosion than say a zinc based fastener, but I’m not sure what makes the most sense for an exterior fastener?

The fasteners rust and the hinges rust. You can get a stainless steel bolt kit for the fastener with new j nuts for the back. If they're rusted from the outside you may have to drill them out.

You can get new factory hinges that are approximately the same shape as your originals or a plethora of aftermarkets. From $$ to $$$$$$$

as a general understanding, stainless steel on aluminum causes corrosion on both elements. Although a large surface of exposed aluminum with Stainless bolt will survive much longer than an equally proportionate ratio of the aluminum to stainless. Both will corrode in time, and you should also avoid Galv and SS as well. Its all Anodic to Cathodic corrosion and boils down (like all things) to chemistry. Galvanic corrosion is the process for all of it.

a simple zinc plated or galvanized bolt should be enough, Or if you want to use SS and avoid the tea staining and desctruction of the aluminum panel, put a barrier of good paint, silicone, nylon.. something between the Anode and the Cathode (Aluminum= Anode/ SS bolt = Cathode).

The hinge bolts don't touch the panels
Except that they pass through it. And there are nuts on the back side and depending on the frame it is steal or galv. Should this topic ever come up in a search, the information is there and available.

the jnuts are zinc plated steel and it doesn't touch the panel , what's to worry about ? the replacement Jnuts are SS
