Exmoor Molded Mat Question

For those of you who installed this in your Defender, how did you cut the seat box mat for the handbrake? Did you use sandwich the seat box mat between the handbrake base and the seat box or did you use spacers on the two M10 bolts?

I believe I just cut the holes to bolt it through, just sandwiched the matting between the handbrake and box
