New factory engines? What vintage, because the Bosch blocks suck ass. I decided to pick up a GEMs I found with about 80k. My 90’s GEMs has about 200k and I’m assuming will need a rebuild at some point but it’s still on the original head gaskets. When that time comes I’ll drop this disco GEMs in and take the original to a solid machine shop for the treatment.

I just helped a friend pull a very low mileage 4.6 out of a NAS 110 that had been upgraded. He has the receipts for the work and I think the engine has less than 15k miles on it. It was built with a 3.9 (v-belt & distributor) front cover so it would be a drop-in replacement for your 3.9.

Sent you a message about this engine.

So the consensus is that a newer Rover 4.6 maybe dropped into NAS Defender 90 using the original wiring, ECU, 3.9/4.0 plenum with little to no mods and still be able to pass CA smog?

you shouldn't have issues swapping in the 4.6.
I've not had a smog guy poke around the engine bay - he does ask the hood to be opened but nothing more than just walk around it.
I'm in bay area and had a swap done.

Don’t intend to hijack this thread but some of you may have an answer to a question I’ve been thinking about.

What kind of ballpark number of shop hours would seem reasonable to do a stock GEMS for GEMS swap. My kid has a D1 that might need a rebuild in the near term and I have a 4.0 with gaskets and all seals done ready for a direct swap.
