You can also use Discovery steel spare wheel nuts. The are nice because they have a flange so the socket doesn't damage the finish on the wheel. Pic from the Expedition Exchange website. View attachment 11813
I wouldn't. They don't have the same strength rating as the typical nuts as they have fewer thread engagements. One of the great attributes of these rims is the tremendous loads that a single rim can sustain--so if you are offroading and you come down a ledge at an angle onto one tire distributing the majority of the load, the rim can handle it. That load is transmitted unequally along the 5 studs--you can imagine the tensile load being transmitted to which ever stud is on top first while the lowers experience compression.

So no, that nut is for a spare tire.

That said, I have never broken or stripped out a nut/thread. I would just say that it isn't a good idea in general due to this reason. YMMV.

"They have a rated strength of 2200KG, which working out as 8800KG for the whole vehicle seems a little extreme, but from the viewpoint of an expedition vehicle they can take a fully loaded Defender comfortably on one wheel - a possible situation you may find yourself in on tricky terrain. "

The threads don't fully engage into a normal steel wheel lug with short studs and a wolf wheel. I'm not an engineer, but I know several people who have run this setup including extensive off road use on trails such as the Rubicon and Dusy Ershim. I think more realistically if they were inadequate the threads would strip out when mechanics tighten them down with an impact. I have seen that on a 97 NAS D90 with Wolf wheels and short studs.

Did the stud or nut threads strip? Spare steel nuts or normal steel nuts?

The stud stripped out. I can't remember if the lug itself was damaged, but I'm sure I replaced it. These were normal steel wheel nuts, not the spare nuts.

Trucklites, stock grill/bezels and front bumper installed. Celebrated by taking Drago out for a walk tonight, I think he was happy to get some air.

Installed the new Masai front windows on Saturday, (forgot to grab pics). Decided to take Sunday off from projects and take Drago out for a leg stretch, he was a happy man.

Dove into our Exmoor matting system project this weekend. Started off by building a stand from scraps in the garage to help while I was measuring and cutting the seat box portion.

12088

I bought a 7/8” hole saw to help with the project, it was well worth the $13!

I took my time, measured like 15 times, then drilled and cut.

Once that was complete the rest of the install was pretty straight forward. Pretty excited with the outcome. Cleaned up the interior and made a huge difference in cabin noise.

The reward for all the work this weekend was a Sunday afternoon exploration session. Most of our favorite trails are still snowed out, but still enjoyed our time in the green room.
