Diesel mileage reports - MPG of 200 Tdi vs others

I'm not sure how it is not directly comparable. Both vehicles are 1991 models. Others than the bodies and the engines, they are the same. Maintenance is not higher on the TDI. Why would it? Reliability is the same and I've driven them both about the same. I could care less about "professional" support and really that would be the same as well if I did.

It is a perfect direct comparison.

Weight and size are not comparable. I?ve only had a 200 for a couple years and I love having it but I could not enjoy it as much if it were my only daily vehicle. Since I?ve owned it it?s has needed, HG, bearings, oil pump, glow plugs, injectors, turbo, radiator, and now the IP is dripping like a whore in church. That?s High Maintenance in my book.

Well it is not my problem you got a lemon. Mine has been trouble free as was the Disco. They weigh pretty close to the same and are the same height. The Disco was longer but that has no affect on fuel consumption. The 90 is fine to drive everyday. Really no different than the Disco. Same suspension, same gear train.

Disco vs 90. Not the same weight, not the same aerodynamics. Point is around 20 is what you can expect on a kitted out 110. Nobody ever got the 30 mpg that people claim with these engines. If you want good mpg get a 4 banger coupe or hatch or strip down your Land Rover so it's just you and the 4 wheels on the ground. No tools, spares, accessories, or extra tires.

For me the engine's sweet spot with the original 1.4 tcase is around 60-63 mph. Push above it, and while the truck will happily do it ,your economy suffers. I had 235 bfg ats on one of the 130's and experimented with fuel economy. I got 1 tank where I averaged 23.5 with a 130 with hoop set and canvas, winch and rockware bumper and recovery gear under the back seat, on that tank I made a point of not driving more than an indicated 63 or so. I found that if I ran 70-75 with the same truck I was getting around 16-18. The one tank with 23.5 was the only time I ever got that mileage with a tdi. My driving habits seem to dictate high teens.

Yeah, when I go for 60 mph, I end up sitting right at 62. It seems like a place where the truck is happy. And it will go up hills at that speed.

Yeah, I also know that I have a leak of some type in my fuel tank.

You can easily swap out the fuel tank in a half day or less.

On anther note: never thought I would see diesel cost $0.71 more per gallon when compared to regular gasoline.

I just drove 200 miles on freeway, 60-65, mostly flat. At 230 miles I filled up the tank to see what roughly 90% freeway, unloaded MPG is.....

....19.1mpg....
