Diesel mileage reports - MPG of 200 Tdi vs others

I figured I would start a new thread about what MPG you are getting with Rover diesel engines and to compare the different diesel models (2.5, 2.5 TD, 200 Tdi, 300 Tdi, TD5).

I have a 200 Tdi factory original in my 1991 110 3 door and I have been recording 28 MPG average for the past six plus months. Average altitude is 6600 ft. 90% city driving under 50 MPH. Max highway speed 80 MPH for longer trips.

I wanted to share my experiences because when I was trying to purchase my Rover I really wanted to know if buying a diesel would save on overall fuel costs. I have noticed that the price of diesel fuel is normally higher but very rarely goes up or down in price.
I also wanted to have the option of running Bio fuel and did so over the summer until the cold set in this past fall. B20 is available in my area at two dealers.

Please report your results for the group to compare.

Will be following this thread. And some time in the next month or so, I may be able to contribute.

I average about 20MPG in my Td5. Best mileage was 28MPG. Majority of my driving is city, with 1 or 2 a year road trips thrown in. Utah, Southern California.

I'm using Fuelly, which is a great app for tracking fill ups, mileage etc

 I feel like I am about to die at any moment above 70 in my truck

I didn't say how long I was driving at 80 but it wasn't very long for sure. :D Mine is happiest around 70-72. I don't feel like it's going to break apart and the noise isn't all that bad even with no sound deading material.
I like to take 2 lane side trips instead of the major highways as the traffic can be killer even if I stay to the right. I-25 and I-70 in Colorado are not good places for a old slow diesel truck.
V8 Rovers on the major highways is no big deal. But I couldn't take the poor mileage anymore. Even my wife's 2015 LR4 still only gets into the low 20's on long flat hwy trips with a light foot and the mid teens in the city with eco stopping the motor all the time.

I have no trouble doing posted speed limit here in Texas, 85MPH. fueled 2hundy

Flatlander :) Whats your MPH like?
I'm at 6000 ft or more everyday so I think that has to be factored in as well.
I have family in Texas so we make many trips to most of Texas every few years.

I average about 26 mpg in my exmod with the 200tdi. Best tank was 29. Top speed 85 mph on the flat, but usually keep it around 75 mph. That's with a 1.4 ratio transfer case.

With the 2.5na diesel that was in it when I got it the top speed was 60 to 65 mph and 22 mpg was about the best it would do. But I can't say how much of that difference in fuel economy is due to the less efficient engine versus the 1.6 ratio transfer case.

Not so much of the flatlander, my 90 spends a fair amount of time in the moutains of NM 7 to 9 thousand feet, I only know it gets alot better mpg than our D3 and usally towing a trailer (M146) full of stuff. I just fill it up when it gets low. It's the 14 hours getting out of TX that buggers me.

That's about what I'm getting combining city, highway and some steep highway hills. I'm curious what you higher milage guys are doing differently. The UK guys are using Imperial gallons (1.2 US gallons) so that would account for the 20% increase and they claim 25ish MPG.

All right, Gents. I've gone nerdy here, and created a simple Google Sheets page for us to record our mileage on.

It should be easy to use, but I am including two bits that might help us narrow down differences in mileage. The type of driving, and the roof rack.

Nothing complicated about this. If you know how to use a spread sheet, maybe suggest a modification. But really, I just thought it would be cool to see what our real average is.

The first one is done as an example. Fill in what you have if you have been keeping track, or fill it in when you fill up at the pump.

I daily drive a 200tdi in a 90 when I lived in the UK. If you keep it 60mph on the highway you'll get incredible returns. It's also more quiet.

That should have said daily drove. Damnit. I sold that truck before I moved back to the US. Definitely regret that. It was so dependable.

I got about 20mpg driving the 2.5NA a few hundred miles back when I first bought it. I think I'll try it out again, because I'm thinking of driving it to SCARR.

Thanks for putting this together.
I was hoping we would get some good feedback and information that can be used real world.

Funny how the family did the opposite last year on our Texas road trip.
Stops in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and finally South Padre Island.
We also did a road trip to NM early last year Taos, Santa Fe, and a short day in Albuquerque for a balloon festival event on Valentines day. I love NM almost as much as CO.

I was surprised I have been getting such constant MPGs but I have been logging for months and the numbers are the same 28 average. I have 235/85-16 Wrangler Duratrac tires. I drive at altitude min 6000 ft to 10,000 plus. I haven't taken it up to the high mountains yet but this year I will be at at least 13,000 ft on trails.

My truck is pretty light, 3 door soft top, less than 4,000 lbs. Running BFG MT KM2 255 85 16. No roof rack. Straight pipe, no muffler. Manual steering. I keep the tires up over 40 psi to help with that a bit.

I entered info as I see it from this thread. Kind of interesting, and hopefully it will get more and more accurate as time goes on.
