D2 Steering Lock

My mother drives a 2004 D2 that just turned 100k. It's her third Discovery since the mid-90s, so while she's 75, she's pretty familiar with the car.

I wasn't there, so what follows is everything I know.

Last week the car felt like it had a flat tire or a broken axle (a condition she experienced twice a few years ago in an Audi). She pulls off the road and shuts off the car to check it out; tires looked fine. Back in the car, inserts and turns the key. Car starts, but her steering wheel remains locked.

Shuts it off. Tries again, and now she can't turn the key at all. A 'big burly guy' offered to help, but also had no luck.

75 minutes later in the Phoenix heat and AAA shows up. Mom sits in their AC while the tech gives it a go, and has no problem. Grover (the green Rover) starts up, the steering wheel works, and the car feels normal on the drive home and subsequently.

Setting aside the weird driving feel she reports, does her steering wheel issue sound familiar? She knows that her steering wheel does/can lock, and she knows how to unlock it. This was apparently something different from that. If there is something she can address, replace, lubricate, etc, that would be great to know. Her current thought is that when it happens, 'it just needs to rest,' which doesn't sound very satisfying.

Thanks
Matthew

Sounds like the steering lock mechanism is worn/busted. It wont get better. Think the solution is a new ignition key cylinder....
