Cummins Repower ISF 2.8 for Defenders

Good to know that the HD r380 will be okay with the torque bumped up.
I have a r380 sitting in my garage, is it possible to order the parts from Ashcroft and make it "HD"? I know I can change my transfer case to 1.2 ratio but was wondering if I can also make the r380 HD.

Thank you,

Nope, cant do that. They dont sell the HD bearings by themselves. Also, the inside of the transmission case needs machined out a bit to fit the beefier bearings.

Yep, those are them, but you cant buy just the bearings. I asked. Just have to pull the trigger on a fully built Ashcroft HD R380.

If any of you are MotorTrend On Demand subscribers, there is a recent Dirt Every Day Extra all about impressions of the new tune. The guys running r2.8s on Ultimate Adventure got the flash. So they drove to UA got the flash there and then wheeled. All said it was an instantly noticeable upgrade.

Got it - great to hear the Ashcroft R380 HD will be strong enough. I must have mis-read your other post - thought it said he didn?t think it was strong enough.

Yeah, the question was did the higher torque mean the R380 was a no go.
I said Dave tells me no, meaning they will hold up. My bad, should have clarified.

To put some context on this, we were offering to have harder/stronger main and input shafts made. Dave responded that this wouldn't be necessary, his HD box's could handle it.

I'm assuming the biggest nasty you can get. I put valeo 130 hd six spring clutches in every truck I work on

Something custom would need to be made up. There are a couple of places in the UK that have a lot of experience with heavily tuned TD5s and 6BTs.

You will need a lot more than that.

Talking with Kevin @ Axis just now. it looks like the path forward is a custom milled flywheel. In addition to an adapter ring and integrated slave/throwout bearing like used on many domestic makes.

He can buy 14 inch cast iron disks and machine them down and the fit the Cummins ring gear.

Clutch he's asked me for suggestions. The problem is we are limited to what fits inside an r380 stumpy bell housing. Ie can't go with a large diameter disc or massive pressure plate. Open to suggestions, links, co's to talk to

Don?t have any experience with these, seemed neat in the googlewebs. And expensive.

Two of the instagram swaps are using R380s, I think at least one of the km3 event trucks was an r380. All were probably the old tune.

Pressure plates don't need to be big diameter to have high torque capacity. Racing multi-plate clutches are pretty small in diameter. A lot smaller than what we have. A cerametallic disc, maybe even a 6 puck sprung which are a bit grabby but still very streetable, instead of organic disc (like the current kits use) might be all we need

I would give McLeod a call. Made in USA and might be able to do a small run of clutches. Any of the big guys will want too many pieces for an order or this size. A shop like Tilton will be too expensive

There is a local clutch guy, who some racing shops I know use, but have never dealt with personally. I have heard positive things http://www.falconauto.com/ I think he would be a worth a phone call. He might be willing to go the extra mile needed here to get everything working right. I think he will do one off applications.

Yes thanks, had seen the LOF stuff. Have already bounced off of Centerforce, Tilton, and Mcleod.
Just want to make sure we have considered/ are aware of, everything out there.
Custom/small run clutch components have zero appeal for this application, looking-hoping for an off the shelf or @ least readily available, ie on a shelf somewhere solution. Having a clutch made to order when one fails isn't really an option.

Bowler sells a package where they take a tdci to 190hp and 370ft lbs, seemingly with stock clutch.

Thanks John, have emailed clutch-fix to see what they offer.

It won't happen. The TD5 and TDCI stuff is different. You need a 310 lb-ft TDI clutch. There is no reason for one to exist. The stock stuff is not good enough. Don't skimp or you will have unhappy customers when their clutches start to slip in 6 months.

Talk to these guys: http://clutch-fix.co.uk/ The 6BT crowd is very happy with them. They will know what fits in the R380 and be able to work something out for the torque of the engine.
That's a very cool website.

I thought the 6BT crowd were (mainly) using the DAF truck transmissions ?

If an R380 can work with a 6BT, I am all ears ! ;)
