COVID19

Well, someone had to start the thread...

So, I'm on something like "soft quarantine" because someone who was in a meeting with my wife last week has become very sick, but there are no tests, so we don't know if we are actually exposed, or what. So we are staying home for at least 72 hours past the last time when we are done with what "symptoms" we have. That is, three of the four of us are having what would normally be thought of as sinus or allergy symptoms. None of us feel bad, no fever, just sinus cough tickle in the throat type of stuff.

Anyway. I wanted to see what everyone else was up to. It looks like Seattle area is going to be locked down soon enough. Probably Portland, maybe our county. And California is locked down as of this evening. I think it's the right thing to do. I've been writing letters to our school administration and board for over a month, discussing it with people I know, and hearing from people I know that this thing is serious. I've been reading as much as I can from science, medical, and eyewitness sources since January. I began stocking up the week we got back from Christmas Break. And now that I'm stuck at home for at least a week, maybe more, I know I made the exact right decision. I never saw anyone on Facebook say anything unless they were making fun of people who were concerned about it till last Thursday. But finally, our school, state, and the feds seem to be doing something about this. The one thing that worries me most right now is that we don't have enough of the right ICU equipment in the USA for what is coming in the next month.

Well if there was ever a good time to lock yourself in the garage and finish those projects which have been hanging over your head. Spend time with family. Rinse and repeat. We will get through it. Positive thoughts to any of you who are directly affected by having a loved one ill and or financially hit by this. Shelter in place and get this shit over with.

Hope everyone is doing well. I am carrying on with work as usual. Not much different, since I already work remotely, other than two rug rats running around.

Planning on buttoning up the 110 cabin insulation and sealing project this weekend. Better call RN for a few parts before everything shuts down.

Anyway, everybody, feel free to discuss but with a few ground rules:

- no politics whatsoever
- no fear-mongering
- no fake news or unsubstantiated rumors

If this thread turns into the shit show that we saw on Discoweb, it will go away.

Stay safe out there!

I'm very suited to being locked in, to wander the three acres we have and fight the black berries, or to work on projects. However, I am having to keep up with "teaching" online. I have a lot of online presence in my curriculum already, but it is all designed to be in partner with in-class lecture, discussions, etc.... so I'm essentially redesigning as I go anyway.

So, yeah, I just want to hear some first hand accounts of what you guys are up to, and what types of changes you're seeing in your communities.

Buddy of mine was in Tahoe last weekend. Was dumping snow on his young family as they were skiing. The slopes all shut down half-way through their first day, and they were stuck in a cabin with 3 feet of snow and everything closed down, like a ghost town. So he had to pack his stuff up and hit the road after two days, to get back to... San Francisco, where he will be able to get to, but will not be able to leave home once there. 7,000,000 under fairly strict quarantine in the Bay Area. So he collected food at stops along the way home.

This is a big event. History.

If I get quarantined I plan on detailing all the vehicles, hone my TIG welding skills and watching Fauda season 3 on Netflix.
Friends in Israel are saying they get fined if they leave their house.
Sister in Brussels referred to this as "house arrest".
Cousins in The Netherlands are busting out their old board games.
Me? Flying empty jets around the country hoping my industry and company bounce back in due time.
Stay safe and if you had a bidet you wouldn't be worrying about the toilet paper shortage.

I'm grateful for the fact that wifey and I made the decision to "order" our son home from Spain after Trump's talk last week. He may have travelled all day to get home, but even he now admits it was the right call. Kudos to University of Michigan for ordering the return of its students a full ten days before all hell broke loose.

I am grateful to Norwegian, an airline I fear will not survive much longer and their crews for all the work it took to complete his two flights on time. 90% of all passengers landing at Logan Airport last Friday night were, like him, students.

We're prepped sufficiently to survive for some time. Restocking fresh produce brought a few eye opening changes at the local supermarket, some of which I think will stay long after this is all over. Friends in Italy and HK say we're two weeks behind them in progression of the disease through the population.

We're working from home. Son is remote learning from the University of Granada Spain.

Positive case in my building one floor below. One of the Mandarin radio people and they were mostly in the studios and at their desk. They went home last week and self quarantined. I am sure that this is as close as I want to get to the virus.
On situational telework for the time being. My conservative guess is through April. Hoping that our useless Facilities staff can get the entire building sterilized before we are called back but not having any faith in that happening at all.

In Southeast PA where the my county has the highest concentration of cases for now. Governor just shut down the state, finally. As it was business as usual for too many here around town. I'm hoping they have the resources to enforce but don't need to.

Working from home mostly, which my job is to get the rest of the company to work from home. So no rover time unfortunately.

Stay safe everyone, please stay in as much as possible.

I work alone (tax accountant) and am not taking appointments beginning yesterday, wife stays home

I've been only accepting drop offs for the last week ... no sit down discussions.

I think I'm a week late in stopping that as it is

We'll know in two or three weeks if I've avoided infection.

Thankfully e-mail and the post work just fine for the human interaction my business requires.

Iowa just made the announcement that they've extended the individual income tax filing and payment date to 31-July

Hoping for more precise language from Treasury on the Federal dates ... the whole 90-day extension on payment date thing leaves a little too much room for interpretation to make me comfortable.

Same. I am questioning some of those "life-sustaining" businesses on that 5 page list.

Battery was low last night walking into Giant when my wife called to tell me to about the lock down. Came in the office this morning to finalize getting the few remote users ready. Everyone is in positive spirits and maintaining their distances.

My truck is up at Red Door so not tinkering for me. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Wonder when Delaware and Jersey are going to drop the hammer like PA did.

With the exception of occasional trips to the grocery store or carry out food, we're locked in and not leaving the immediate are of the house. A few walks to the neighborhood elementary school (1 mile each way) & that's about it. Working from home, but few opportunities for customer meetings at this time.

Youngest son just sent me a Washington Post link saying Treasury stated this morning that the 15-April filing date will be extended to 15-July.

Thanks, that's good to know. Previously heard that only the payment date was extended, but filings and/or extensions were still due by April 15.

Family is under self quarantine, only venturing out when necessary. Our offices in Florida are still open, so no mandated shelter-in-place or work from arrangements yet. We have several people who are on paid time off or working from home due to illness or possible contact. That said, things are changing by the hour it seems.

Thankfully, plenty to do on the truck if it comes to that.
