Cold weather hard start and smokes a lot

The 110 ex mod 2.5na is in storage but prior to that when the weather started to get cold it would take me 3 to 4 times warming up the glow plugs before she would fire up. Even then it would struggle and produce a lot of black smoke @ startup. Once idling for a little the vehicle was fine and little to no smoke. In the summer never an issue she starts up fine, light black smoke. Any insight appreciated. Kent

Sounds pretty normal for a NA diesel. You can add some anti gel to the fuel next fill up to see if it helps.

I usually move 2.5's over to a universal glow plug relay and a momentary switch. Easy find locally and not that hard to wire. A big win on getting the stress off the ignition switch, not to mention ability to glow a few times before even cranking the engine.

When i says cold weather actually mean anything below 40degrees. Currently have it in a climate controlled shed until 4/1. Bring to the garage for a thorough check up each spring and will include some of what’s been mentioned above. Everything i have read does lead me to the Injectors , but then again could be something else.

My Ex MOD 2.5 NA would do the same. The relay I believe from the MOD only blasted the Glow plugs for less than 12 seconds. Might try to hit it a few times to make sure they're nice and hot. Otherwise the black smoke on startup, Especially a big innitial POOF.. is normal and healthy. If it was making White or Blue haze smoke then you have a problem. She's just burning some fuel on startup and as you said.. it gets normal after it is warm.. which takes a while on that engine and it needs load.

those 2.5 NA's are hard to kill even if you did have a problem. Don't stress it and enjoy it.

Hahaha, after 4 yrs and thousands put into it nothing stress’s me at this point. Ive come to enjoy the lack of power, speed . Etc. it served me well last year all hunting seasons with no breakdowns. Outside of the continuous oil leaks planning on keeping it and driving for years to come, at least until until Esx90 decides to sell me his Tith.

haha, no chance, i think i like my ex-mod better than my NAS...well..

What @Frenglish said..mine does the the same when outside in cold weather. I use a magnetic heater placed on the oil pan overnight and some anti-gel gas treatment which helps.
