Co Western Slopes and Moab Utah Sept 10-21st

Going to start this thread more as a place holder for pics than anything else. Famous for never taking any but really going to make a concerted effort this time. This is just a group of friends gathering in the year of Covid to do what we all love.
Our initial/core group will be:

Short and McCaig are driving the Series 1 Oxford truck from the coast of Oregon to the NC outer Banks (sea to Sea)on the Trans America Trail.

The stop @ Moab was planned long ago as part of the now cancelled GARR and Dave and McMike are following through so that plan drove the dates for this. We'll leave Moab on Wednesday morning and head to the Telluride/Ouray area and be there till Friday, the Oxford crew will split off and head for Oklahoma. Friday we'll head to Grand Junction, Co and hang out with Bill Burke a few days, he's got some trails he wants to take us on.
Hopefully will get some pictures taken and posted for those who've never been and seen these areas.

Plans are being driven by Oxfords schedule. Present plan is to leave Moab the morning of the 16th headed over to that area. We'll be traveling with with Dave and Mike in Oxford and think that rig has a top speed of 45 or so. We plan to do whatever that truck can do Wednesday (theres an email string where they are concerned about taking it up Ophir and down Blackbear ). Wednesday & Thursday night we'll be @ KOA Ouray. Thursday Oxford heads to Oklahoma and we'll be wheeling, most trucks have an empty seat, including Kraigs Cummins 2.8 powered 90. Friday we'll be @ Ouray but likely move to Grand Junction late day. Plan is for Saturday with Bill on trails around Grand Junction.
Sunday Bill is throwing a party that is open to all.

My wife and I are tired of the smoke in Reno and are loading our truck to meet up on this trip. We should be somewhere around Moab tomorrow (Sun, 9/13) and it would be great if someone could let me know where we might On next with the group. We’re bringing camping stuff, but Leigh Anne would prefer a hotel if most people are staying in a “central” location.

Someone just clued me in to this thread. I'm already on my way to Moab from Ohio. Drove out in my 300tdi 87. Currently we're in Fairplay, and hitting up Mosquito, the Alpine loop, and Gateway before arriving in Moab on Wednesday. Sounds like this group will be out of there by then though? I'm staying in Moab 2-3 nights

Morning of 9/11. Left Daves cabin @ Redstone as a group of 5 trucks and made it up to Crystal Mill above town of Marble. From the mill Raub, Kraig, Mark, Trey, and I went up the Gothic Road past the Devils Punch Bowl and over Schofield pass and down to Crested Butte. My brother and Kip (KGH here) went over McClure Pass and then Kebler Pass to get there by smoother roads.

Carnage shots:
1)Installing new ceramic pads on F350- US post office parking lot rural Mo. No way we were doing Rockies without new front pads.
2)Trey fixing Mackett's brake line at campground Moab
4) Mackett looses caliper bolt and breaks hardline Rim Rocker Trail Utah-drove 53 miles to Moab without touching brakes-despite awesome trail fix.
3) Vollers breaks 3 teeth off rear ring gear Top of The World Trail Moab by trying a difficult line. Trey pulled axle shafts and drive shaft on trail and Peter drove it out in 2wd.
Winchline to LR4 was to keep truck stable on grade while Trey was under it.
Bill @ GBR overnighted a pair of diff's and Trey swapped them next morning in campground @ Moab. Peter gave Trey the Ashcroft lockers for his efforts-just need new ring and pinions.
5) First of two Goodyear trailer tire blow outs. Less than 12 mos old
and around 5k miles. No more Goodyear's

Kip/KGH roached his tcase climbing to Eisenhower after rear seal died and leaked all lube. He ended up adding lube for days and eventually swapped tcase in a primative campground with no amenities.

Read that any way you'd like but as usual Raub's truck commanded the most time. Amazing that he drove it from South Dakota to Moab and back. Damn thing only dies when Trey is around to fix it.

We had talked about it off and on for over a year. I discouraged him from doing it to a NAS 110. He was a day behind us on Rim Rocker a 160 mile trail with only one small town on the entire length. Pete's truck backfired once and that was it. They ended up towing it with a strap to the same primitive campground where Kip had swapped out his transfer case earlier in the day. Pete posted on facebook looking for help and Bill Burke hooked up his car trailer and went and retrieved Pete. They took it to a shop in Grand Junction and that guy told Pete no bueno.
Ran into Pete @ Bills place the following Saturday for the pre party party. Pete took a ride in Kraig's 90 and that seemed to make up his mind. Asked us to trailer it back personally rather than transport it to Va. So Trey's 90 got bumped.

On 9/11 after a late lunch in Crested Butte where we were joined by two fellows from Africa and their wives (up to 7 trucks @ that point).
We proceeded down to Gunnison and then around Blue Mesa reservoir. We had intended to go to Black Canyon but it was late and if we were going to get down the Rim Rocker and find a place to camp we needed to roll.

We ended up in that campground on Colorado Rt 90 West of Montrose. The climb up to the campground was chilly and as we set up camp in the dark there were patches of snow on the ground. We pulled up elevation on Raubs phone and we were @ 8850. Everyone went to bed early. Next morning before dawn Mackett had coffee going and most were up and packed up shortly after dawn. Kip and the two African fellows decided to stay and swap Kips tcase. My brother and Anna and Raub and Mark decided to take off for the town of Nucla where there was fuel and a diner for breakfast.
No discussion, they just bolted. Kraig has a tablet on his dash with several NAV apps. He suggests we take a narrow track off the Rim Rocker that follows the Southern edge of the high plateau we were on.Upside was it cut 9 miles off the route the others had just taken.
Views were incredible-40 miles or so.
We ended up beating the others to Nucla.
