Clunk when putting in reverse

97 NAS SW auto - 82k miles, all original truck. clunks hard when putting in reverse. Can this be fixed or just normal for these? Thanks

It is pretty normal for them to clunk when putting it into gear. If you went through and rebuilt the front and rear diffs, and transfer case it will improve, but they always clunk to a certain degree.

My 97 NAS has clunked hard when placed in reverse for over 20 years. If it suddenly stopped, I'd be worried.

It's normal, but can be minimized by putting the car into neutral momentarily before you come to a halt. Once stopped go for reverse.
