Caliper Re-Seal

Started to pull calipers to rebuild then noticed my caliper seal kits do not have any kind of seal which seals the caliper halves.

Parts cat. lists 17H8764L that looks like it might be the right style of seal (square section O-ring) but application is for H-K and I've got a V (1997)

There are four M10 bolts holding the caliper halves together. How are the halves sealed to each other?

Thanks,

Stephan

I just rebuilt all 4 of my calipers. All the experts say not to split the halves unless you have a good reason. I rebuilt and painted the calipers without splitting them. A little more effort, but they look and work perfectly.

What Angus said👆🏻. Just redid mine a few weeks ago. (BTW there is no seal between the two halves).

The most difficult step is getting the metal piston seal retainers back in without bending them. Make sure the groove is clean and no burrs. Press them squarely. Good luck.

I had a great deal of trouble with installing the new metal wiper / dust seal retainers and ruined a couple in the process. I had to order an extra seal kit. For my second attempt, I filed just a little off the edges of the retainers. They still seemed very secure and hopefully dont come out.

I split the halves and replaced the o-rings but the old ones seemed to be in good condition and suspect reusing them would have been fine. I have another pair of calipers I need to reseal and will try to do it without spliting the halves. FWIW, 6 of the 8 pistons (80,000 miles on them) were pitted and had to be replaced.

See below if you want the o-rings.

Splitting halves and not having replacement for those tiny O rings made me get a whole set of new calipers. the old set was 20 yrs old (vehicle is a 95 classic) and reseal would have been buying time to postpone the unavoidable.
I procured parts from LR direct, altogether about $600.00 new at my door step, included, shipping and customs, received in about a week.
hopefully they last another 20 yrs.

Replaced mine with stainless pistons. Hoping this will be my last set.

As for the retainers, if you seat the positions first it make it much easier to drive the retainers home.
